MARTIN PEDROZA, WORTH REPEATING, WINNER: “I rode this horse before and this is the kind that once you ride it, you fall in love with it. He was (Rafael) Bejarano’s horse, and I picked the horse up after Bejarano had the spill at Del Mar. He ran good and Richard (Mandella) was very happy. But Richard has his own riders and I was hoping to hook up with this horse again someday in the future. Today was the day. I got to know the horse, and it paid off.
“In my country (Panama) they teach you not to be scared in the jockey school. What we do is very dangerous and we just take it a day at a time. If you fall you just have to bounce back and forget about it. If you keep it in the back of your head you won’t be successful. When I went down today and I didn’t break a bone, I knew I was good to go.”

SETH SEMKIN, AGENT AND A MEMBER OF OWNER B. WAYNE HUGHES’ TEAM, WORTH REPEATING, WINNER: ‘’He was very game. Richard (Mandella, who was in Dubai with Champ Pegasus) had always felt if this horse could run over a long distance of ground, he’d be pretty tough, because he’s a grinder. He just gallops and gallops, and he always wanted to give him a try. He actually ran a good race at Hollywood Park (last Oct. 21) going a mile and a quarter on the main track (actually Cushion Track, beaten a nose), so this was an opportunity to try an extra long distance and it worked out. It was great.’’

NOTES: The winning owner is B. Wayne Hughes of Lexington, Ky., who races as Spendthrift Farm LLC.
