PATRICK VALENZUELA, CALIFORNIA NECTAR, WINNER: “She broke really well and down the backside, I felt like Superman, because she felt like super girl—she was flying. When that filly (Zazu) came to her, my filly picked her head up and tried even harder. I don’t think she was ever going to get by us.”

LEANDRO MORA, ASSISTANT TO DOUG O’NEILL, CALIFORNIA NECTAR, WINNER: “He (Patrick Valenzuela) was very motivated before we went to the track. He says, ‘Looks like we can take it again (they won the California Breeders’ Champion Stakes together on Dec. 27).’ I said, ‘Well, just try to break well, because we have the No. 1 post, so you don’t get stuck.’ . . . Right now, there are no plans (for her next race), because we’ll go race by race, step by step. She’s won two (straight) races at seven furlongs. We’re going to try and stretch her out. She’s only three, and everybody has Kentucky Oaks dreams.”

NOTES: The winning owner is Pablo Suarez and his wife, Michelle, of Valencia.
