PATRICK VALENZUELA, CALIFORNIA NECTAR, WINNER: “I expected the two (Noise of the Crowd) to go with the one (Teddy’s Promise). When she didn’t and I could see that the one was alone on the lead, I decided to pull some surprise tactics and throw some dirt in her face at the five sixteenths. It worked and my filly just went on with it.

WHEN ASKED WHAT IT FELT LIKE TO WIN HIS FIRST SANTA ANITA STAKES IN FOUR YEARS: “It’s great, it’s like being back home here at Santa Anita. There’s no greater feeling. My family is here and it’s great to be back competing with these great riders.”

DOUG O’NEILL, CALIFORNIA NECTAR, WINNER: “She’s so talented. She’s got a lot of upside. Mentally, she’s just getting better and better. She always shown us a lot in the mornings, and there’s been a couple races in the afternoon where she got a little anxious and upset. She was so good today. She just had a beautiful trip and hopefully we can build off that and get her back going two turns.”

NOTES: The winning owner is Pablo Suarez and his wife, Michelle, of Valencia.
