GARETT GOMEZ, VENTANA, WINNER: “I thought we were having a little too much to do on the front end, as far as the pace of the race was concerned. (Rafael) Bejarano dropped off me just a little bit going into the far turn and we were all able to take a little bit of a breather. When we turned for home he started fighting and Bejarano and I hooked up for the last eighth of a mile. He showed a lot of heart and a lot of gameness. First time I’ve been on him and he ran a really good race.”

BOB BAFFERT, VENTANA, WINNER: “We bought him as a 2-year-old and he didn’t pan out. He’s finally coming around now. Garrett Gomez was on his belly there…I’m tellin’ you he’s like riding to keep his job. We’ll probably run this horse back in the Churchill Downs Handicap (Gr. II, May 1).”

WHEN ASKED ABOUT REBOUNDING WITH GOMEZ AFTER DISAPPOINTING RESULT IN DERBY: “I wasn’t mad or upset, I was just frustrated at the position he put him (Lookin At Lucky)…Sometimes he rides ‘em to his style and I just think you gotta let these horses run…Look at how (Julien) Leparoux rode Awesome Act in The Wood…you can’t take too much hold of these kind of horses.”
ROBERT TROEGER, GATO GO WIN, SECOND: “He ran huge. Well, a head bob, so … it was a heck of a run. He ran huge – he showed he belongs. That was a tough horse he got beat by. What a nice horse. We’ll see how he looks, and we’ll go from there.”
