SAN VICENTE STAKES QUOTES, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16TH, 2009

JOCKEY QUOTES

GARRETT GOMEZ, EVITA ARGENTINA, WINNER: “The track is soggy all over, but at the three eighths pole, it seemed a little deeper and she got off the bridle with me, so I really had to go to work on her to get her to running again. She was able to wear them down, but I know she can run even better than that.”

TRAINER QUOTES

LARRY BENAVIDEZ, ASSISTANT TO JOHN SADLER, EVITA ARGENTINA, WINNER: ”I wasn’t too concerned with her being that far back. They ran the mile last race in 39 (1:39), and they were nice horses . . . I was pretty confident, because this filly is going to give you her run no matter what. Garrett (Gomez) cut the corner perfect. It was a great ride by him.” Benavidez said the Fair Grounds Oaks might be next (Grade II, $400,000, 1 1/16 miles on March 14).

NOTES: Benavidez said Sadler was home, a bit under the weather. The winning owners are Theodore Aroney, who races as Halo Farms, and Ronald Judy, who races as Three Sisters Thoroughbreds. Each is from Rancho Santa Fe. Evita Argentina is the third filly to win the San Vicente, joining Hubble Bubble (1947) and Busher (1945). This was the 68th running of the San Vicente.
