GARRETT GOMEZ, BEHOLDER, 3-10 FAVORITE, WINNER: “She ran really well today. She left the gate like a shot. I went ahead and made the decision to clear most of them. I gave them (the field) a jump or two to see what they were going to do, and it looked like no one really wanted to go so I went ahead and crossed over, and was going to dictate it from there.

“I knew she was going to have to work a little harder today, just from the simple fact that Baffert let my horse get an easy lead in the Las Virgenes.

GARRETT GOMEZ, JIMMY CREED, WINNER: “Richard (Mandella) just told me to let him out of the gate, let him be happy, let him get up on his feet and see what happens. He didn’t want me to take too much away from him so I didn’t, and he traveled beautifully. I was able to set the bit up in his mouth and he traveled well all the way around.

RAFAEL BEJARANO, SCARLET STRIKE, WINNER: “I had to move a little early because the position I was in was going to make it a little hard to win. At the three-eighths pole I found my position right behind the leader so I just followed her and kept on running. I still had a lot of horse, and I knew I did, so that’s why I moved a little early to find a better position.”

JERRY HOLLDENDORFER, SCARLET STRIKE, WINNER: “A terrific race for this filly. I’m very proud of her.

KEVIN KRIGGER, GOLDENCENTS, WINNER: “Right here, right now, is the biggest moment of my life. It’s only going to get better, the horse, me, the team.

“As far as this horse, I had him relaxed and that’s the key to him all the way. I wasn’t fighting him, I really wasn’t, I just kept him at his pace and kept him relaxed.”

(During his post race interview with the media)

“These guys…Glen, Josh, Dave, Doug…they gave me the privilege to ride this horse the way I did today, confidently and with no instructions.

RAFAEL BEJARANO, DOINGHARDTIMEAGAIN, WINNER: “I just tried to find my position and figure it out from there. She was a little hot going to the gate, a little excited, but she was good once she was in the gate. When I saw that the favorite (Sweet Marini) didn’t break that well I just had to find my position and I would go from there, I was going to just follow the seven horse (Hail Mary).”

JOE TALAMO, SWEET MARINI, 3-5 FAVORITE, EIGHTH: “I had a good trip. She broke a little slow, and she just didn’t fire today.

JOE TALAMO, OMEGA STAR, WINNER: “I thought of all the horses that ran today, she (second choice, the lone filly, Could Be Trouble) would have won. That’s part of the game; those things happen, and you’ve got to just keep moving forward, movin’ on.”

(In response to how the trip went for him)

“That was a perfect trip. I had a lot of horse under me the whole way, tracked right outside, and he did the rest.”

VICTOR ESPINOZA, FIGHTING HUSSAR, SECOND: “He ran big. When he takes the lead he kind of waits for other horses.

JULIEN LEPAROUX, TIZ FLIRTATIOUS, WINNER: “She proved it again today. She’s never been worse than third in her career. She likes to run, and she’s a good mare, it was nice to be on her today. She’s a fighter; every jock likes those kind (of horses). She won big today, so it was good. She was a little keen today, but she dropped the bit and relaxed on the backside, and after that, she got up on them.

MARTIN GARCIA, SKY KINGDOM, WINNER: “I was outside the speed today. I let my horse break on his own and just cruise around. He relaxed perfectly, and when I kicked in he just took off. My plan was to let somebody go to the lead and let my horse sit on the outside and stay comfortable, and that is exactly the way it went today.”

EDWIN MALDONADO, OILISBLACKGOLD, SECOND: “I thought they were going to go a little quicker today. They went at a slow pace so it gave the winner a win. My horse ran good. I thought I had the race at the quarter pole.

BRICE BLANC, BENCH GLORY, WINNER: “She did great. First time out after a long layoff like this, you never know. She liked the course and she was ready today. She’s super-special. She put me in the race like she always does and came up with that strong kick.”

(In response to what a Frenchman does on St. Patty’s Day.)

“I can’t drink beer, so I guess I’ll have to think of something else to do. Champagne . . . Irish champagne!”

MIKE SMITH, ISMENE, WINNER: “On dirt, I win. You know, dirt’s better.

ROSIE NAPRAVNIK, JOYFUL VICTORY, WINNER: (Do you know if Larry Jones has anything in mind for her next race?) “You better ask him, I don’t know yet.”

(In response to how the trip set up for her.)

“She broke sharp. She likes to run freely and doesn’t like being restrained so it was nice that we had plenty of room on the rail to take the lead into the first turn. She was just relaxed and ran a great race.”
