JOCKEY QUOTES

VICTOR ESPINOZA, ACTING LADY, WINNER: “I couldn’t have asked for a better trip. I didn’t want to fight her, I wanted to try and let her do what she wanted to do. At the half mile pole, I had a decision to make, whether to go inside or out. I decided I wanted to save ground, so I stayed inside and we got lucky. Sometimes it works out and sometimes not, but today we got through and she finished great.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

RAFAEL BEJARANO, LIBERIAN FREIGHTER, WINNER: “He felt so good in the post parade today and he improved a lot. I knew the seven (My City by the Bay) would show more speed than me, so I decided to let him go and follow him. When I felt pressure from the other horses coming from behind, I let him go and he took off. He finished great.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

VICTOR ESPINOZA, TRIUMPHANT FLIGHT, WINNER: “This horse has such a big heart. He’s tried hard in all of his races. Today, we had the one hole, so we really didn’t have much choice except to just let him run away from there. The fractions helped us and from the three eighths pole to the wire, he picked it up.”

JOE TALAMO, STREAM CAT, WINNER: “I knew there was a good pace. I figured they went the first half in like 46 and change or 47. My horse switched leads real nice when we turned down the backside and I was able to get through on the inside all the way into the far turn. I knew Big Booster was going to be coming, so at the quarter pole, I wanted to kick away from him and hold on if I could. It worked out great.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOEL ROSARIO, BELMONT CAT, WINNER: “She’s a nice filly and she seemed like she was feeling really well today. She was pulling me a little going to the far turn, but she was pretty relaxed most of the way and that’s why she finished so well. I was a little worried when we were between horses late, but she really kicked it.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

VICTOR ESPINOZA, MIDSHIPS, WINNER: “Bobby (Frankel) told me to just let him run free. He left it up to me and I was very happy with the way he broke out of the gate. I was real confident with how he was running the whole way, he was running very easily.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

GARRETT GOMEZ, LIFE IS SWEET, WINNER: “We had a beautiful trip and she relaxed very well for me. Going to the three eighths pole, they were spread three wide in front of me and everybody was looking back for me. She was just galloping along within herself and I was confident she’d be able to quicken when I asked her. When we turned for home, Rosario (Joel, aboard Model) made a right-hand turn in front of us, so we had to deal with that, but it didn’t matter. She’s just a beautiful specimen.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

DAVID FLORES, APRIL PRIDE, WINNER: “I had a good position and going to the half mile pole, they started coming back to me like they were stopping. I didn’t want to move too soon but I also didn’t want to strangle my filly, so I moved out and just let her run along. Around the turn I decided to just go ahead and get away from the favorite. Turning for home, she was full of run and she finished great.”

GARRETT GOMEZ, SAUCEY EVENING, 7-10 FAVORITE, FOURTH: “She just kind of went through the motions. I don’t have any kind of answers.”

QUOTES

MIKE SMITH, STARDOM BOUND, WINNER: “It seemed like she got lost out there early. We had a terrible trip. When I moved out with her turning for home, everybody else went out at the same time and we got caught really wide. From the sixteenth pole home, I thought we could grind ‘em down, but I was worried. At the wire though, she put her ears up and she was playing with the pony coming back. Maybe this is the kind of race she needed. I guess you could say it was a not-so-heady ride.”
