JOCKEY QUOTES

JOCKEY QUOTES

CHANTAL SUTHERLAND, AMEN HALLELUJAH, WINNER: “I hate to say it, but she’s really easy to ride. She’s calm, cool and you don’t have to do much as a jockey. I could see they were going really fast on the lead, and I loved it. The pace was sweet and I didn’t want to move too soon because I didn’t want to get fanned too wide. It was like watching a movie, the way it set up, it couldn’t have been any better. I was concerned about Garrett’s (Gomez, aboard Franny Freud) horse but when I asked my filly she had plenty in reserve. The move she made was just fantastic.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

TYLER BAZE, PAPA CLEM, WINNER: “I rode my horse with a lot of confidence. I didn’t want to get in a speed duel with Mike (Smith, aboard Smart Bid) around the first turn because we would have just killed each other off. I lost this horse last year when I broke my shoulder and it’s a blessing to get back on him. He’s so game and you can so anything with him. Now, it’s on to the Strub (Stakes, to be run Feb. 6).”

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOEL ROSARIO, CRISP, WINNER: “I watched her run the last time (Dec. 10 maiden win at Hollywood Park), and she was getting out with Bejarano. I wanted to make sure she was relaxed today and I just wanted to put her where she was going to be comfortable. She’s a nice little filly and she did everything I wanted her to do. She finished great.”

LARRY BENAVIDEZ, ASSISTANT TO JOHN SADLER, CRISP, WINNER: “I didn’t really give Joel (Rosario) any instructions. I just kind of let him ride his race.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOEL ROSARIO, ST TRINIANS, WINNER: “The last time I rode her, she won so easy and she was very impressive today. She gets low to the ground and she tries really hard. I don’t know how good she is.”

MIKE SMITH, NEKO BAY, WINNER: “His last race (third, Gr. III Native Diver Handicap, Dec. 12, Hollywood Park) was better than it seems. We were in behind a slow, slow pace and today John wanted me to get him back and make one run and that’s what he did. The way it turned out, I think his last race set him up perfect for today.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOE TALAMO, CHEROKEE HEAVEN, WINNER: “I had a perfect trip. On paper, it didn’t look like there was that much speed in the race. Marty said to lay close if I wanted to and I did, but they were going faster than we thought they would. It didn’t matter, because my horse was fully loaded the whole way and it was just a matter of when I was going to let him run. Even though we were fairly close-up, I think he came home the last sixteenth in sub-five (seconds). He did it the right way.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

GARRETT GOMEZ, COMPARI, WINNER: “When I rode him last April, I thought he was a good horse, but when I rode him last time, (Dec. 17, Hollywood Park) off the layoff, I said, ‘He can run a little bit more than I thought he could.’ He’s turned into a classy little horse and Marty’s done a great job with him the past six months. Today, he crossed the dirt really good and I got him lined out, and he came home really good for us.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

VICTOR ESPINOZA, MACIAS, WINNER: “I expected him to show speed today, but he was under control and he settled real nice with me around the first turn. Going to the far turn, I had a lot of horse under me, but I didn’t want to take the lead too soon. I waited as long as I could and when I asked him, he really accelerated. Through the stretch, I knew the other horse (Alfarabi) was running, but there was no worry.”
