JOCKEY QUOTES

JOEL ROSARIO, CRISP, WINNER: “The blinkers made a big difference. She was more focused today and she was into the bridle. She finished great, but she tried to lay on that filly inside of her (All Due Respect), but she always does that. She ran great, she never looked back today.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO, BLIND LUCK, THIRD: “I was in a good position, but when we came into the stretch, those two fillies in front of me (Crisp and All Due Respect), tightened up and my hole closed. We just ran out of time—she was really running.”

MIKE SMITH, PROVISO, WINNER: “Billy (Mott) told me, ‘You’ve got to get her to relax if you can. Anything you do could set her off…’ She beat a great bunch of boys here today. I thought I won it and I pumped my fist just to sell it (to the placing judges).”

LEANA WILLIFORD, ASSISTANT TO BILL MOTT, PROVISO, WINNER: “I thought he got the bob. I just told Mike (Smith) to be very still (patient).”

MARTIN GARCIA, MISREMEMBERED, WINNER: “I feel amazing, man! This is the first time I rode in the Big ‘Cap and I had the opportunity to make it to the winner’s circle. I’ve been working the horse, and Bob (Baffert) told me to give him a clear break and just not fight him. He wanted me to make one run, and that’s what I did. When my horse got to the lead I knew I still had a lot of horse. When the other horses started to come on, he never pulled up. My horse was able to keep going when the other horse (Neko Bay) was closing.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO, BOURBON BAY, WINNER: “I was in a great position to the first turn. I thought there were two horses with speed, the number eight (Sudden War) and the number nine (Porfido). When we broke from the gate, they took hold of the nine and sent the eight, so I was able to cover my horse up and stay nice and relaxed until the half-mile pole and then I asked him. With the fractions we had, you have to have a lot of horse (to catch the pacesetter), but when you’re on the best horse, it makes it easy. My horse has a really good turn of foot in the stretch.”

DAVID FLORES, BOB BLACK JACK, WINNER: “He’s been working very well and I’ve worked him every week. We have a good connection. He’s a great horse and we’ve had some great memories. Today, he missed the first couple jumps away from the gate, but he’s got so much natural speed, he made the lead right away and he relaxed really well. I was glad that we didn’t get too much pressure to the turn because I was concerned about the last quarter, but he was ready.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOE TALAMO, SIDNEY’S CANDY, WINNER: “I was confident he’d bounce back with a good effort today. John (Sadler) told me to just get a good start and go from there. At the three-eighths I just kind of clucked to him and he got right into the bridle. They’ve done a great job with this horse. I just basically sat on him today and I couldn’t believe that final time (1:20.91), that’s awesome. It’s very exciting to have a horse of this caliber.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO, TUSCAN EVENING, WINNER: “I knew the number four (Czechers) had speed and that he (Kent Desormeaux) could send her or try to put pressure on me. He sent her, so I wanted to stay behind her and let my horse stay more relaxed. From the three-eighths, my horse has a good turn of foot, she can really fly. She came running and I didn’t have to worry about anybody else coming late. I was on the best horse.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

ALEX SOLIS, STRIKING DANCER, WINNER: “I had an awesome trip. The trainer (Ken McPeek) called me and just told me, ‘I trust you. Just use your own judgment.’ I was able to save ground around the first turn and when we got to the five-eighths, I moved out where I had a good position and I had some options. She’s an awesome filly and she beat a nice group of horses today.”
