MULTIPLE GRADE I WINNER EMOLLIENT HEADS MONDAY’S GRADE I, $300,000 GAMELY STAKES; JUDDMONTE FARMS HOMEBRED IS TRAINED BY MOTT
PRESTIGIOUS FILLY & MARE STAKES ATTRACTS FIELD OF NINE AT 1 1/8 MILES ON TURF; UPSTART STORMY LUCY BIDS FOR THREE IN-A-ROW AND WILL BE RIDDEN FOR FIRST TIME BY TALAMO
ARCADIA, Calif. (May 23, 2014)—Trainer Bill Mott’s hard-hitting three-time Grade I winner Emollient heads a competitive field of nine fillies and mares in Monday’s Grade I, $300,000 Gamely Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf. Named for the three-time Eclipse Champion (1967, ’68 & ’69) Gamely, and previously run at Hollywood Park, the Gamely will be contested for the first time at Santa Anita on Monday.
A close third as the 3-5 favorite in the Grade III Doubledogdare Stakes going 1 1/6 miles on Keeneland’s polytrack April 18, Emollient is well-familiar with Santa Anita, as she was a close fourth to Stormy Lucy two starts back in the Grade II Santa Ana Stakes and was fourth, beaten one length by Dank three back in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf on Nov. 2.
Ridden in her last eight starts by Mike Smith, the front-running 4-year-old filly by Empire Maker will be handled for the first time by female sensation Rosie Napravnik. Bred in Kentucky by her owners, Juddmonte Farms, Emollient is winless from two tries at 1 1/8 miles on turf. She’s 13-5-2-1 overall with earnings of $1,100,900.
A winner of two consecutive graded stakes, improving Stormy Lucy seeks her third consecutive win in the Gamely. Ridden to victory by Rafael Bejarano in the Grade II Santa Ana Stakes on March 16 and in the Grade III Santa Barbara Handicap April 13, she’ll be handled for the first time by Joe Talamo, as Bejarano is currently unavailable due to injury.
The 8-5 favorite in the mile and a quarter turf Santa Barbara, Stormy Lucy was handled with utmost patience by Bejarano and got similar handling in the 1 1/8 miles turf Santa Ana. Sold privately following her Santa Ana win, she was transferred from Frank Lucarelli to his former high school classmate, Ed Moger, Jr., who saddled her for the first time in the Santa Barbara.
Owned by Ed’s brother, Steve Moger, Stormy Lucy, a 5-year-old mare by Stormy Atlantic, has a win, two seconds and a third from four starts at 1 1/8 miles on turf. She is 22-7-2-3 overall with earnings of $482,200.
An impressive winner in her Southern California debut of the Grade III, one mile turf Wilshire Stakes on April 27, Parranda won going away from off the pace in her first start for Jerry Hollendorfer. A 5-year-old Florida-bred mare by English Channel, Parranda has three wins from five tries at the Gamely distance and is 22-9-2-2 overall. Ridden by Bejarano in the Wilshire, she’ll get the services of Corey Nakatani on Saturday.
Owned by Gillian Campell, Dan Clark, Gatto Racing, LLC and partners, Parranda has earnings of $512,655.
Second, beaten 1 ½ lengths by Stormy Lucy two starts back in the Santa Ana Stakes on March 16, trainer Wesley Ward’s Emotional Kitten was most recently fourth, beaten three quarters of a length, in the Grade I Jenny Wiley Stakes going 1 1/16 miles on turf at Keeneland April 12. A winner three-back of the Grade II Mrs. Revere at Churchill Downs on Nov. 16, she’ll be ridden for the fourth consecutive time by Victor Espinoza.
A 4-year-old filly by Kitten’s Joy, Emotional Kitten was bred in Pennsylvania by her owners, Ken and Sarah Ramsey. A versatile sort, she would appear to be best suited stalking a realistic pace. Winless from three tries at 1 1/8 miles on turf, she’s 16-4-3-3 overall with earnings of $412,533.
Although she’s still looking for her first Southern California win, Ron McAnally’s Argentine-bred Miss Serendipity just missed when running second, beaten a neck by Stormy Lucy in the Grade III Santa Barbara Handicap on April 13. A close third to “Lucy” two-back in the Santa Ana Stakes on March 16, she’ll be ridden for the third consecutive time by Brice Blanc.
A 6-year-old mare, Miss Serendipity was a Group I winner in Argentina and she’ll be making her fifth stateside start on Monday. Owned by Anselmo E. Cavalieri, she is 23-5-6-3 overall with earnings of $193,358.
The complete field for the Gamely, to be run as the seventh race on a nine-race card Monday, with jockeys and weights in post position order: Customer Base, Mike Smith, 119; Emotional Kitten, Victor Espinoza, 119; Stormy Lucy, Joe Talamo, 119; Changethechannel, Tyler Baze, 119; Premier Steps, Gary Stevens, 119; Miss Serendipity, Brice Blanc, 121; Parranda, Corey Nakatani, 119; Emollient, Rosie Napravnik, 121, and Rhagori, Kent Desormeaux, 119.
