KATHLEEN ROSE LEADS THROUGHOUT IN SANTA ANITA FEATURE
ARCADIA, CA., May 1, 2014---Kathleen Rose led from start to finish under jockey Edwin Maldonado to post a 7-1 upset in Thursday’s $71,550 feature race at Santa Anita, a one-mile turf event for fillies and mares, three years old and up.
Trained by Mike Machowsky for owner Bruce Zietz of West Hills, CA, who races as B & B Zietz Stables, Inc., Kathleen Rose took command at once, set fractions of 23.12, 46.80, 1:10.53 and 1:22.14 to score by a length and a half over 4-5 favorite Rhagori, who closed too late from sixth early on under Rafael Bejarano.
Charlie Em was third in the field of eight runners, followed by Scarlet Strike, Silver Hustler, One Time Only, Wittgenstein and Buckingham Bull.
Bonnie Lesley was scratched.
A 4-year-old California-bred daughter of Good Journey, Kathleen Rose earned $46,800 for her fourth victory from eight career starts. She paid $16.20, $5.40 and $4.40 across the board, covering the distance on a firm course in 1:33.83 under 124 pounds.
“She’s gotten older and more mature since I rode her when she broke her maiden (last Nov. 3),” Maldonado said. “I think she’s best going two turns.”
In Thursday’s first race, Wake Up Nick, a 2-year-old California-bred son of Cindago making his debut, broke a 42-year-old track record when he won by 9 ¼ lengths, covering 4 ½ furlongs in 51.22 second under Mario Gutierrez.
The 1-2 favorite owned by J. Paul Reddam and Dennis O’Neill and trained by Doug O’Neill cracked the mark of 51.40 established by Willy Float on March 23, 1972.
