SANTA ANITA PARK SURPASSES GUINNESS WORLD RECORD FOR BEER TASTING AS 490 ‘YELP ELITE’ MEMBERS SWIG BEERS ON TRACK’S GRANDSTAND APRON

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 22, 2014)—Pending final review from the Guinness Book of World Records, Santa Anita Park, with the help of 490 “Yelp Elite” online devotees, will have established a new mark for total number of beer tasters Saturday afternoon in the track’s first-ever Largest Beer Tasting Event.

Conducted on Santa Anita’s Grandstand apron and organized by John Kopcha (Marketing major, University of Arizona, 2013), and Diana Cheng (Cal State Fullerton Communications major, 2012), the event attracted a large percentage of youthful, first-time race goers.

The previous record of 322 “tasters,” established by English-based Oast House, was easily eclipsed on a beautiful sunshine-filled afternoon at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains.

“This was an incredible event,” said Nate Newby, Santa Anita Vice President of Marketing. “Our primary goal was to host an out-of-the-box event that would attract a large and diverse group of primarily young people and this far exceeded our expectations. There’s no doubt that a good many of these folks had never been to Santa Anita before and we’re very hopeful they’ll be back to see us soon.

“We want to especially thank a great group of interns that were here this past fall for the Breeders’ Cup. Many of them had never been to the races before or to Santa Anita and many of them suggested that in order to attract new people, we need to consider these types of events. We’ll be doing plenty of them in the future.”

Newby also said that the event consumed 18 beer kegs overall: Six Shock Top, six Stella Artois and six Chocolate Wheat Shock Top. Spillage was reportedly minimal.
