MARKETING MIX, TIZ FLIRTATIOUS & LADY OF SHAMROCK ADORN STAR-STUDDED GRADE I RODEO DRIVE AT SANTA ANITA ON SATURDAY

FIELD OF SEVEN TO CONTEST 1 ¼ MILES ON TURF IN BREEDERS’ CUP ‘WIN AND YOU’RE IN’ PREP TO $2 MILLION FILLY & MARE TURF ON NOV. 2

ARCADIA, Calif. (Sept. 25, 2013)—In what could prove to be the race of the day, an outstanding field of seven distaffers have signed on to run in Saturday’s Grade I, $250,000 Rodeo Drive Stakes at 1 ¼ miles on turf—in preparation for the Grade I, $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, to be run at the same distance at Santa Anita on Nov. 2.

Glen Hill Farm’s Marketing Mix, who will break from the outside under Gary Stevens, may rate a slight advantage in the Rodeo Drive. Victorious over local rivals Tiz Flirtatious and Lady of Shamrock in the Grade I Gamely Stakes at Hollywood Park May 27, Marketing Mix was most recently fourth, beaten 5 ¾ lengths as the even money favorite in the Grade I Beverly D Stakes Aug. 17 at Arlington Park in Chicago.

Trained by Tom Proctor, Marketing Mix has been handled in her past three starts by Stevens, who also guided the 5-year-old mare by Medaglia d’Oro to a handy score in the marathon Grade III Sunset Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park on July 14.

Marketing Mix has two wins and two seconds from five starts at the distance and is 19-10-4-1 overall, with earnings of $1,905,893.

Pamela Ziebarth’s homebred Tiz Flirtatious, a 5-year-old California-bred mare by Tizbud, would appear to be at the peak of her powers for trainer Marty Jones. A rousing 2 ¼ length winner at odds of 3-5 in the Grade II 1 1/8 mile turf John C. Mabee Stakes at Del Mar Aug. 11, Tiz Flirtatious will attempt a mile and a quarter for the first time in what will be her 12th career start.

Second, beaten a head by Marketing Mix in the Gamely, Tiz Flirtatious will be ridden for fourth consecutive time on Saturday by Julien Leparoux.

She has never been out of the money, with seven wins, three seconds and one third place finish to her credit. Her earnings now stand at $624,800.

Hronis Racing’s Lady of Shamrock, who added blinkers when second by 2 ¼ lengths to Tiz Flirtatious in the Mabee, will take them off on Saturday and in all probability, be taken well off the pace by Garrett Gomez, who rides her for the first time.

Trained by John Sadler, Lady of Shamrock has two wins and a second at the distance, and she is an impressive four for six, with one second place finish, over the Santa Anita turf. Her overall mark stands at 16-7-4-2, with earnings of $945,400.

High riding Rosie Napravnik will ship in to ride Calumet Farm’s Starstruck, with whom she teamed for victory in the Grade III, 1 1/8 mile turf Matchmaker Stakes at Monmouth on July 28.

Irish-bred and raced initially, Starstruck was one for three at a mile and a quarter in Ireland and will make here fifth stateside start for trainer Larry Jones in the Rodeo Drive. She is 11-3-2-1 overall, with $136,890 in earnings.

The complete field for the Rodeo Drive, to be run as the sixth race on an 11-race program Saturday, with jockeys and weights in post position order: Topic, Joe Talamo, 116; Lady of Shamrock, Garrett Gomez, 119; Tiz Flirtatious, Julien Leparoux, 121; My Gi Gi, Rafael Bejarano, 119; Starstruck, Rosie Napravnik, 119; Vionnet, Victor Espinoza, 119, and Marketing Mix, Gary Stevens, 124.
