GRADE II WINNER BLUESKIESNRAINBOWS CRUSHES FOES IN SANTA ANITA ALLOWANCE, HOLLENDORFER TRAINEE CRUISES TO 3 ¾ LENGTH ALLOWANCE WIN GOING ONE MILE
ARCADIA, Calif. (March 22, 2013)—Blueskiesnrainbows, a winner of the Grade II Swaps Stakes this past July, crushed four rivals in Friday’s second race, a second condition allowance for older horses, as he coasted to a 3 ¾ length victory while covering one mile in 1:36.28.
Breaking from post position three, the 4-year-old Virginia-bred colt by English Channel went to the front under Rafael Bejarano and stayed there through fractions of 23.48, 47.25, 1:11.88 and 1:24.00.
“On the first turn I waited to see what the horses on the rail were going to do before I decided where to go,” said Bejarano. “But then when they didn’t go, I made it to the lead easy. I was a bit wide on the first turn but then when I made the lead so easily, I was good from there.”
Indeed he was, and as the heavy favorite at 3-5, a majority of the punters were good as well. Blueskiesanrainbows paid $3.40, $2.20 and $2.10.
“We thought the horse was training real well, and we think he’s only going to continue to improve,” said winning trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. “He ran a good race today and it was a good decision by Rafael to go when he thought he should.”
Phantom Lover, ridden by Victor Espinoza, tracked the winner from the half mile pole home and finished second, 5 ¼ lengths clear of Royal F J and Garrett Gomez.
Off at 4-1, Phantom Lover paid $3.20 and $2.40.
Royal F J, off at 10-1, paid $3.00 to show.
The Grade III, $100,000 Tokyo City Cup will highlight a nine-race program on Saturday at Santa Anita. First post time is 12:30 p.m.
