SANTA ANITA TO HOST ‘DOUBLE DOWN CHALLENGE’ MARCH 9 & 10, HIGH-END HANDICAPPERS TO CONVERGE ON GREAT RACE PLACE, $10,000 FIRST PRIZE UP FOR GRABS

ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 24, 2013)—Santa Anita Park has announced it will once again host the prestigious “Double Down Challenge” two-day handicapping tournament on March 9 & 10, with $10,000 in first prize cash, five seats to the DRF/NTRA Championship and two Breeders’ Cup Challenge handicapping seats at stake.

“Our players gave us some very insightful input last year and that helped us to create a great format for this tournament,” said Santa Anita Senior Director of Marketing John Niedzwiedz. “This season’s two-day contest will mirror that format with the exception of increasing the prize pool to the participants. This year, top prizes will include two entries into the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge and we’ll increase the total number of seats in the 2014 NHC Tournament to five.”

“As we did last year, we will once again cap our ‘Double Down’ entries at 80 on a first come, first served basis. We are also excited to announce that Horse Player Magazine founder Tom Quigley will be involved with our tournament to assist Santa Anita in producing another world-class event. Tom can be reached to answer any questions regarding this event at Quigley@HorsePlayerdaily.com.”

Niedzwiedz also noted that there is a $1,000 buy-in and a $500.00 charge to enter the “Double Down Challenge.”

“There’s a lot of camaraderie, but these people are also very, very competitive,” said Niedzwiedz. “For the Midwest and East Coast guys, it’s hard to find a better place than Santa Anita in the early spring. We’ve got the perfect mix, great racing, a great facility and we hope, great weather.”

All entrants may “Double Down” prior to the first race on Day Two, Sunday, March 10—meaning they can re-enter the contest with an additional $500.00 entry.
