STARRY SKIES STORMS HOME TO TAKE $58,000 EASTER SUNDAY PURSE
ARCADIA, Calif. (April 8, 2012) – With leading rider Joel Rosario recording his third victory of the afternoon, odds-on favorite Starry Skies stormed home on the far outside Sunday to overtake pacesetter Tasty Treat by 1 ½ lengths in capturing Santa Anita’s $58,000 Easter Sunday Purse for California-bred fillies and mares at 6 ½ furlongs on turf.
Clocked in 1:13.16, it was the second win in as many starts for the undefeated 3-year-old daughter of Sky Mesa trained by Marty Jones.
Rosario allowed Starry Skies to lag early in the field of five. The bay filly trailed when turning into the stretch as she uncorked her wicked closing kick.
Tasty Treat, a 9-1 shot ridden by Joe Talamo, gamely held on for the place, three-quarters of a length ahead of 5-2 second choice Darling Dodie and jockey Garrett Gomez.
The heavily supported winner paid $3.40, $2.60 and $2.10. The mutuels on Tasty Treat were $5.40 and $2.40. Darling Dodie paid $2.20 to show. Shezabigbroad was scratched earlier in the day.
The winning purse of $34,800 brought the earnings of Starry Skies to $68,400 for Harris Farms, Per Antonsen, Donald Valpredo and Michael J. Valpredo. She was bred by Harris Farms and the Valpredos.
Santa Anita will be dark Monday through Wednesday before racing resumes on Thursday with an eight-race program that gets underway at 1 p.m.
