LUCKY SANTA ANITA FAN HITS $10,000 MYSTERY MUTUEL, LA PUENTE RESIDENT TO USE PROCEEDS FOR HOME REPAIRS AND COLLEGE EDUCATION SAVINGS
ARCADIA, Calif. (April 22, 2012)—Eddie Garcia of La Puente was glad he checked his mailbox earlier this week as he received a Santa Anita Thoroughbred’s Club Mystery Mutuel Voucher, good for redemption on Santa Anita’s closing day, Sunday, April 22. The result was that Garcia discovered he was holding a live ticket worth $10,000.
“This is incredible,” said Garcia, a native of the Philippine capital of Manila, who works as a real estate management accountant in Culver City. “The first time I came to Santa Anita was the day Manila won the Breeders’ Cup (Turf) in 1986. I’ve been coming here every weekend and holiday since, with no absences.”
Garcia, 60, explained that he took a circuitous route to cashing his ticket.
“I went to a self-service machine and the ticket got stuck. It said ‘Go to a customer service assistant.’ I did and then we tried it again and it got stuck again. The customer service person got it out and told me to take the voucher to the Marketing Department and then I ran into (Santa Anita C.E.O.) Mark Verge. I told him I was looking for Marketing and he said ‘Come on!’
“We went into the office and they entered the bar code from the voucher and that’s when I knew I had won. All my friends said ‘It’s really true!’”
Married and a father of two, Garcia intends to make good use of his winnings. “Maybe I’ll spend some money fixing up my house and I’ll put the rest of it in a savings account to help pay for my kids’ college,” he said.
A Thoroughbred’s Club member since 1987, Garcia receives promotional items via direct mail on a regular basis from The Great Race Place.
Santa Anita’s Autumn Meet will begin in late September and will culminate with the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which will be run on Nov. 2 and 3.
