WITH SAN LUIS REY POSTPONED ONE WEEK, CONTENTIOUS FIELD OF SEVEN TO CONTEST $70,000 SANTANA MILE ON SUNDAY
ARCADIA, Calif. (March 15, 2012) – With Sunday’s Grade II, $150,000 San Luis Rey Stakes turf marathon postponed for one week due to the prospect of foul weather, the 9th running of the $70,000 Santana Mile steps into the feature spot with a contentious field of seven set to compete.
The Santana Mile will be contested as the seventh race on an eight-race program with first post at 12:30 p.m. It brings together an eclectic group.
Worth Repeating, who has been sidelined since last March after winning his first start on dirt in Santa Anita’s Grade III Tokyo City Stakes at 1 ½ miles, returns to action for trainer Richard Mandella with Martin Garcia in the saddle.
Gladding, whose last four starts include twice being outrun in the Grade I Santa Anita Handicap, shortens up for trainer John Sadler following his 2012 Big ’Cap collapse with Mike Smith taking over in the irons.
Canonize, who has never traveled beyond seven furlongs in 12 starts without a stakes win for trainer Ron Ellis, tries two turns for the first time in his 13th start while joined by regular rider Victor Espinoza.
Make Music for Me, who faltered in the Grade I Frank E. Kilroe Mile on turf earlier this month, moves into a more agreeable spot for trainer Alexis Barba with Chantal Sutherland handling the reins.
And Tweebster, second to Canonize in an allowance event at seven furlongs on Feb. 12, will be partnered by Rafael Bejarano in an attempt to provide trainer Bob Baffert with his second successive Santana Mile victory. Baffert won the race last year with 2010 Santa Anita Handicap winner Misremembered.
The complete field for the Santana Mile with jockeys and weights in post position order: Worth Repeating, Martin Garcia, 117; Tweebster, Rafael Bejarano, 117; Spud Spivens, David Flores, 120; Gladding, Mike Smith, 117; Make Music for Me, Chantal Sutherland, 117; Honour the Deputy, Corey Nakatani, 117, and Canonize, Victor Espinoza, 117.
