ARRIVEDERCI CARO SHAKES OFF NARROW LOSS WITH UPSET WIN IN $58,350 FIELD OF DREAMS PURSE
ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 23, 2012) – Arrivederci Caro, who missed by a head in her Santa Anita debut last month, burst between horses in deep stretch Thursday to connect by a head in the $58,350 Field of Dreams Purse for California-bred fillies and mares at one-mile on turf.
The 6-year-old mare, ridden by Hector Berrios for trainer Genaro Vallejo, emerged victorious in a driving finish involving five of the six starters while negotiating the distance in 1:35.16.
After racing predominantly in Northern California, Arrivederci Caro ventured south last month only to be nailed in the closing strides of a similar event with Berrios in the saddle.
This time, the Chilean-born rider’s timing was perfect as he rallied the chestnut daughter of Caros Love from fifth to edge runner-up California Heat with favored Shezabigbroad another one-half length back in third, a nose ahead of Sunburn, who nipped Elana Mar by a head. The first five were separated by less than one length.
With her third victory in 33 races for Rancho San Roberto and David Wilkerson, Arrivederci Caro shook a bugaboo that had cast her as a nibbler. She has finished second nine times and third on six previous occasions.
The gritty winner paid $13.40, $6.20 and $3. California Heat, ridden by Joe Talamo, returned $9.20 and $4. The show price on Shezabigbroad, with Joel Rosario aboard, was $3.40. The winning purse of $34,800 increased the career earnings of Arrivederci Caro to $146,942.
Racing continues on Friday at Santa Anita with an eight-race program beginning at 1 p.m.
