(Dec. 17, 2010)—In advance of its traditional winter/spring opener on Dec. 26, Santa Anita Park has launched a significant social media effort that includes YouTube Flip Cam interviews, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn, Tycoon Mobile, daily Santa Anita blogs, email blasts, online contests and conventional press releases that include photos.

“We’re very excited to have the capability to take advantage of these new social media platforms,” said Santa Anita Vice President of Marketing, Allen Gutterman. “There’s no doubt this is the wave of the future and we’ve already seen a significant spike in the number of hits our website ( is getting.

“Social media provides limitless opportunities for us to reach out to a younger, more wide-ranging demographic and to reach people who perhaps haven’t been to the races in a long time. We’ve had a very positive response to what we’re doing with Twitter and the Flip Cam interviews we’re using on our website and we’re confident these areas will continue to grow as our meet unfolds. All of these various platforms enable us to better tell our story without having to depend on outside media.”

Beginning Dec. 26, Santa Anita will offer live racing updates (changes, results, payouts, etc), photos, press releases and links to interviews via Facebook and Twitter.

“The benefits of all of this are self-evident,” said Gutterman. “Obviously, this is the kind of information our core fans crave and it’s also the kind of information that new and casual fans like to have. It puts everyone ‘in the game,’ so to speak, and we believe it will help us to rejuvenate and grow the sport’s overall base of support.”
