CHAMPION BOXER VAZQUEZ COMES TO SANTA ANITA, ‘POUND FOR POUND’ TOUGH GUY TO PRESENT TROPHY

ARCADIA, Calif. (April 15, 2010)—Former WBC Super Bantamweight Champion Israel Vazquez, who is preparing for an epic showdown with arch-rival Rafael Marquez on May 22, will be at Santa Anita on Saturday to present the trophy for the Gr. III, $100,000 San Simeon Handicap.

Vazquez, 31, who first visited Santa Anita in January, 2008, is immensely popular in Southern California and brings a 44-4 record, with 34 knockouts, to his fourth fight with Marquez.

The two Mexican natives have been very evenly matched in their three previous fights, with Vazquez winning two, including their most recent, a WBC Super Bantamweight title bout on March 1, 2008. In that fight, Vazquez rallied from a fourth-round knockdown to score a 12-round knockdown of Marquez that proved the difference in a split-decision that enabled Vazquez to retain his title.

By all accounts their previous engagements have been brutal and took physical tolls on both fighters, evidenced by the fact Vazquez required three surgeries to repair a detached retina, necessitating a 19-month layoff.

In addition to presenting the San Simeon trophy, Vazquez will be interviewed live on HRTV and will also pay a visit to the Santa Anita jockeys’ room.

The Vazquez vs. Marquez title fight, dubbed “The Final Chapter,” will be held at Staples Center, home ground for the Los Angeles Lakers, Kings and Clippers.
