ARCADIA, Calif. (March 20, 2009) – Making her first start on grass, Flashover, a daughter of stellar California sire Unusual Heat, responded with a gritty half-length victory over Dotsy Jean Friday in Santa Anita’s featured $48,000 Cassiopeia Purse for California-bred fillies and mares at 6½ furlongs over the track’s downhill turf course.

Bet down to 6-5 favoritism with Joe Talamo along for the ride, Flashover gained a slight advantage over pace-setter and second choice Dotsy Jean, ridden by Joel Rosario, as the pair straightened into the stretch. They proceeded to battle stride-for-stride before Flashover inched clear in the closing yards under a hand ride. The final time was 1:13.12.

It was 2½ lengths back to the show horse, Warren’s Appeal with Alonso Quinonez aboard, in a field reduced to six with the morning scratch of Unusual Fun.

Flashover paid $4.40, $2.80 and $2.40. Dotsy Jean, who had been in search of a second straight win after being claimed by trainer Marty Jones, returned $3.80 and $2.80. The show price on Warren’s Appeal was $3.

Trained by Barry Abrams for the partnership of David Abrams, Madeline Auerbach and Huston Racing, Flashover gained her third victory in six lifetime starts. The 4-year-old bay filly earned $28,800 to elevate her career total to $71,560.

Santa Anita presents a 10-race card on Saturday featuring the Grade II, $150,000 San Luis Rey Handicap at 1½ miles on turf as well as the $65,000 Joe Hernandez Stakes at 6½ furlongs over the hillside turf course. First post is at 12:30 p.m.
