ARCADIA, Calif. (Dec. 6, 2011)—Santa Anita Park will open for its 75th winter/spring meeting on Dec. 26 with a new marketing approach designed to reintroduce Los Angeles area sports fans and entertainment seekers to one of the greatest sporting venues in the world.

“We’re going to take a totally different approach to how we get our message out with the goal being to reach people that might not be that familiar with us,” said Santa Anita Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Chris Quinn.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Dec. 2, 2011)—In response to unprecedented wind-related damage and power outages in the San Gabriel Valley, Southern California Edison has constructed an Emergency Operations Center in Santa Anita’s south parking lot consisting of emergency vehicles, equipment, RVs, tents and 44 emergency relief crews.

Santa Anita’s home city of Arcadia and surrounding communities were hit hard by hurricane-force winds late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning and large areas, including Santa Anita, were without power most of Thursday.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 30, 2011)—Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, the most recognizable figure in American racing, is poised and ready to go after a record 10th Santa Anita training title as his barn readies for Santa Anita’s traditional winter/spring opener on Dec. 26.

Baffert, whose shock of gray/white hair, designer sunglasses and irreverent quips are as much a part of the American Turf as are hay, oats and water, comes off a huge winter/spring run at The Great Race Place in 2010-11.

Baffert led the trainers’ division for a record ninth time with 44 wins, 12 clear of John Sadler. The white haired wonder was also the meet’s leading stakes-winning trainer, with 11 added-money tallies, three better than Sadler’s eight.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 29, 2011)—Eclipse Award winning trainer Steve Asmussen returned to Santa Anita on Tuesday for the second consecutive year and will maintain a stable of approximately 40 horses through Santa Anita’s upcoming winter/spring meeting, which will open on Dec. 26.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 21, 2011)—For the very first time, Christmas Trees will be available for purchase at Santa Anita Park, beginning Friday, Nov. 25. Tahoe Christmas Tree Company will set up in the track’s southwest parking lot, Gate 1, and more than 1,000 trees will be displayed through Dec. 23.

“The majority of our trees come from Oregon direct from the growers,” said Julian Blandino of Tahoe Christmas Trees. “Our trees are hand-picked from the fields and not bought from distributors and wholesalers who buy them in bulk form for chain stores, so Tahoe trees are always fresh.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 18, 2011)—For the first time ever, Circus Vargas, America’s Favorite Big Top Circus, will be coming to Santa Anita Park, with its debut performance scheduled for Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 24 at 7:30 p.m.

Circus Vargas has announced that it will allow those are currently unemployed to bring their families (up to four members) and enjoy the opening night performance, free of charge.

“This is obviously a very generous offer on the part of Circus Vargas,” said Pete Siberell, Santa Anita’s Director of Community Services and Special Projects.
