ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 10, 2010)—A memorial service for longtime turf writer Larry Bortstein, who passed away at age 67 on Jan. 31, will be held in Santa Anita’s FrontRunner Restaurant on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 5 p.m., following the afternoon’s races.

Bortstein, who at the time of his death, was a regular contributor to the Orange County Register and the California Thoroughbred Magazine, succumbed from the effects of a pulmonary embolism he suffered at his home on Jan.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 10, 2010)—There will be a Pick Six carryover of $77,870 into Thursday at Santa Anita, with the possibility of a total Pick Six pool of more than $500,000.

Wednesday’s third race, which was transferred from the 6 ½ furlong downhill turf course to the Pro-Ride synthetic main track, was leg one in the Pick Six and it was won by All Man under Martin Pedroza, returning $6.80 to win. Conditioned by Julio Canani, All Man is a 7-year-old Kentucky-bred gelding owned by Fanticola and Scardino and he provided Canani and Pedroza with their second consecutive win.

Jerry Hollendorfer’s emerging superstar filly Blind Luck is listed as definite for Saturday’s Gr. I, $250,000 Las Virgenes Stakes at one mile. Idle since trouncing six rivals by seven lengths in the Gr. I Hollywood Starlet at 1 1/16 miles on Dec. 20, the 3-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Pollard’s Vision will once again be ridden by Rafael Bejarno.

On the strength of her authoritative win in the Gr. I Oak Leaf Stakes on Oct. 4, Blind Luck was the 7-2 favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Oak Tree on Nov. 6. She finished a troubled third, beaten three-quarters of a length. Her lifetime record stands at 4-1-1 from six starts.

The Gr. II Strub Stakes and the Gr. II Robert B. Lewis Stakes are also scheduled to be run Saturday at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 7, 2010) – An owner and jockey change notwithstanding, Richard’s Kid resorted to what he does best when storming from far behind Sunday to capture Santa Anita’s 72nd running of the Grade II, $150,000 San Antonio Handicap.

With Garrett Gomez aboard, the 8-5 favorite exhibited a remarkable burst of late speed while finding an avenue along the rail to prevail in a blanket finish and defeat longshot Dakota Phone by a head while racing the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.05.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 6, 2010)—Live racing has been cancelled for Saturday at Santa Anita due to heavy overnight and early morning rain that rendered the main track unsuitable for racing, according to racing officials. The decision to cancel was made at 8:30 a.m.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 5, 2010)—A Pick Six carryover of $85,150 will await fans on Saturday at Santa Anita, as no one correctly tabbed six winners on a wet, wintry Friday. It is expected that Saturday’s total pool could exceed $500,000.

There is also a Super High 5 carryover into Saturday of $40,842.

Friday’s Pick Six got off to a formful start, as Lady Alex proved much best under leading rider Rafael Bejarano, winning by five lengths.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 5, 2010) – With Rafael Bejarano gaining his third win of the afternoon, Mobilized mowed down 11-10 favorite Total Bull in the final strides of Friday’s $56,984 allowance feature at Santa Anita while running seven furlongs in 1:21.73.

The three-bagger on the meet’s 28th day gave leading rider Bejarano 36 victories and a nine-win lead over Victor Espinoza.

Total Bull seemed to have a commanding advantage turning into the stretch after putting away early pace-setters Tactful and Uncle Jeep in the field of nine, but just failed to last under jockey Garrett Gomez. The margin of victory was a neck. E Z’s Gentleman, with Joel Rosario aboard, ran on for third, another half-length back.
