ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) _ Royal Delta led all the way in winning the $2 million Ladies' Classic by 1½ lengths on Friday at Santa Anita, making the defending champion the only favorite to win on an upset-filled opening day of the Breeders' Cup.

Jockey Mike Smith earned his 16th victory in the event's 29-year history, breaking a tie for most wins with fellow Hall of Famer Jerry Bailey.

"I hope to be around a few more years to add to it," the 47-year-old rider said.

Royal Delta gave Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott his second consecutive win and fifth overall in the Ladies' Classic, putting him in position to sweep the weekend's biggest races, a feat he accomplished last year. He has three runners in the $5 million Classic on Saturday, a race he won last year with Drosselmeyer.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 1, 2012)—Along with her husband Mike, Amy Phipps, of Evansville, Indiana made the 1,734 mile trek to Santa Anita to attend the two-day Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita on Friday and Saturday and was in line to make a bet on Thursday when she heard an announcement over the public address system.

“I heard the promo about a CashCall Contest,” said Amy Phipps. “I went to Patron Services and the lady gave me a form to fill out and told me where to take it.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 1, 2012)—Dismissed at odds of 12-1, Lady of Fifty bested four rivals in Santa Anita’s $65,000, one-mile Palm Springs Handicap Thursday, getting the distance in 1:36.22, while holding off 4-5 favorite Awesomemundo and Martin Garcia by one-half length.

The Palm Springs, for fillies and mares three and up, attracted a field of five and was carded as the second race on an eight-race program.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 31, 2012)—The inaugural running of Santa Anita’s Grade II, $150,000 Goldikova Stakes, for fillies and mares at one-mile on turf has attracted a competitive field of eight and appears devoid of any clear cut standout as The Great Race Place closes out its 24-day Autumn Meet on Sunday.

Favored in four of her last five starts, including a third-place finish at 3-2 in the restricted one-mile turf Swingtime Stakes on Oct. 6, Irish-bred Byrony figures to again be well supported in the Goldikova.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 28, 2012)—In what appeared to many to be a two-horse race on paper, Red Sun and even money favorite Ryehill Dancer traded punches throughout Sunday’s $65,000 added, one-mile turf Lure Stakes at Santa Anita, with Red Sun and Rafael Bejarano emerging as neck winners, getting the distance in 1:34.03. It was Bejarano’s sixth win from seven tries aboard Red Sun.

“I had to be on the lead with my horse,” said Bejarano. “I knew there was going to be a little speed on the outside so I had to use my horse in the beginning, but after that I was able to relax. When I saw the favorite was coming next to me, I tried to save as much ground as I could and let my horse go with him. This horse always runs well with me.”

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 27, 2012)—For the third straight time this week and the eighth time since opening day, Sept. 28, CashCall’s popular $1,000 to Win Contest produced a winner in Saturday’s ninth and final race at Santa Anita.

George Ouzounian, a 75-year-old native New Yorker and resident of North Hollywood, selected eventual 3-5 favorite Turn On the Brites and Jose Valdivia to win.

“You can’t bet against the favorite in this (contest),” said Ouzounian. “They’ve been winning all the time.”

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 27, 2012)—Rafael Bejarano has been missing at Santa Anita. Missing from his customary perch atop the rider standings, and missing this past Thursday, Friday and, with the exception of the Grade III, $100,000 Autumn Miss Stakes, all of Saturday—his lone engagement, due to a three-day riding suspension.

And, due to the fact the Autumn Miss is classified as a designated race by track stewards, the Peruvian native made the best of his lone opportunity this week, booting home 2-1 favorite Lady Ten, while holding off a furious rally from 9-1 shot Customer Base and Garrett Gomez, to win by neck, getting the Autumn Miss distance in 1:34.95.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 26, 2012)—Fernando Garcia, a 57-year-old resident of El Monte, became the seventh winner of CashCall’s $1,000 to Win Contest, bagging $1,600 as 3-5 favorite Miss Communication easily took Friday’s eighth and final race with leading rider Joe Talamo up.

“I come here to have fun, relax and have a few drinks,” said Garcia, who works as a customer service representative in L.A.’s garment industry. “I come out every Friday and sometimes on Saturdays and Sundays. I play (the CashCall Contest) whenever I come, but I never expected to win.”

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 26, 2012)—Acting upon orders from trainer Peter Miller, Garrett Gomez liked what he saw at the break and sent Guidopanzini to the front and never looked back, winning Santa Anita’s $50,000 allowance feature on Friday by 3 ¼ lengths, getting the 1 1/16 mile distance in 1:43.39.

“I told Garrett, ‘Play the break, and if you like what you see, put him on the lead’,” said Miller. “He’s won on the lead before, so it’s not like it’s totally new to him. At the quarter pole, I wasn’t so sure, but he finished up well.”
