(Feb. 13, 2014)—In a race that could have Derby implications, Bob Baffert’s Bayern, ridden by Gary Stevens, stretched out to a mile and dominated Thursday’s $58,000 Taurus Purse, an allowance for 3-year-olds, winning by 15 lengths while getting the distance in 1:35.77—and was then ridden out past the wire another sixteenth of a mile.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 13, 2014)—Cherubim, an up and coming colt by Henny Hughes, heads a competitive field of six 3-year-olds going seven furlongs in Sunday’s Grade II, $200,000 San Vicente Stakes, an important steppingstone to the $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 5.

(Feb. 9, 2014)—Trainer John Sadler, off to a slow start at the current meet, won his third stakes of the weekend on Sunday, as his Sky High Gal prevailed in a four-horse blanket photo to win the $75,000 Wishing Well Stakes by a head under Corey Nakatani, negotiating 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course in 1:12.22.

‘HE’S A SUPER, MAJORLY TALENTED RACEHORSE,’ SAYS STEVENS

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 8, 2014)—With a second place finish in the Grade I CashCall Futurity fresh on his mind, jockey Gary Stevens bided his time aboard Candy Boy in Saturday’s Grade II, $200,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes and the result was a rousing half length win, as the John Sadler trainee won in-hand going 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.83.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 8, 2014)—Mid-pack past the half mile pole, the John Sadler-trained Vagabond Shoes was caught six wide turning for home and finished resolutely as the 5-2 favorite, winning Saturday’s Grade II, $200,000 San Marcos Stakes by a 1 ¼ lengths under Victor Espinoza, while covering 1 ¼ miles on turf in 1:58.88.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 8, 2014)—With a hot pace to shoot at, longshot Blingo, with Aaron Gryder aboard, wheeled four-deep turning for home and out-gamed fellow longshot Imperative inside the sixteenth pole to take Saturday’s Grade II, $300,000 San Antonio Stakes by a half length, covering 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.95.

(Feb. 7, 2014)—Despite being pressed through blistering fractions of 21.94, 44.22, 1:08.48 and 1:21.45, even money favorite Fury Kapcori shook loose from longshot Batti Man turning for home and held off the late charge of Midnight Transfer to win Santa Anita’s sixth race on Friday, a $60,000 third condition allowance, by 2 ¼ lengths while getting a flat mile in 1:34.50.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 6, 2014)—California-bred Peppy Bolly, an 8-1 longshot ridden by Tyler Baze, pressed the pace and prevailed by a half length to win Santa Anita’s fourth race Friday, a $58,000 first condition allowance for older fillies and mares at six furlongs. The complexion of the race changed dramatically passing the three eighths pole, as 3-5 favorite Cougarontheprowl, who was a half length clear of Peppy Bolly, broke down and was pulled up immediately by Mike Smith.
