ARCADIA, Calif. (Dec. 12, 2017)–With four graded stakes and a bevy of promotional items in store, Santa Anita’s traditional wall calendar invariably caps many holiday wish lists as opening day awaits on Tuesday, Dec. 26. For the 42nd consecutive year, fans will receive this beautifully illustrated calendar free, with paid admission. This year’s calendar theme is “Our Horses, Our Passion.”
“Passion describes not only the horsemen’s dedication to the horses, it also defines the dedication of my graphics team and how I personally feel about this yearly calendar project,” said Candace Coder Chew, Santa Anita’s Director of Print and Graphics, who is an accomplished horsewoman and is married to longtime Southern California trainer, Matt Chew. “We had hundreds of photos to choose from and they’ve been taken by some of the best equine photographers in the business, people like Barbara Livingston, Katey Barrett, Zoe Metz, TJ Abahazy and Cecilia Gustafson.”
Chew, who’s headed up this all-important project for the past 24 years, explained that with each passing year, the theme of the calendar changes.
“I think this year’s theme, especially in light of the horrific fires last week at San Luis Rey Downs, is so near and dear to all of our hearts,” said Chew. “Our fans that come out on opening day can read about the care given to our horses in training every day, from grooming, exercising and nutrition to massage and other forms of therapy, veterinary care and farrier expertise. I’m proud to say this is a celebration of the horse and those who do so much to enrich their lives and improve their performance.”
In addition to the traditional wall calendar, the first 4,000 kids aged 12 and under, will receive a beautiful plush Thoroughbred toy, courtesy of Mathis Brothers Furniture.
With a 10-race card planned, four graded stakes, headed by both the Grade I Malibu and the Grade I La Brea, will highlight a full complement of world-class racing at The Great Race Place the day after Christmas.
Special early first post time on opening day is set for 12 noon and admission gates open at 10 a.m. For a complete listing of all promotional events on opening day at Santa Anita, please visit santaanita.com or call (626) 574-RACE.
