ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 3, 2015)–Superstar mare Beholder returned to Santa Anita’s main track this morning for the first time since winning last Saturday’s Grade I Zenyatta Stakes for trainer Richard Mandella.
With Mandella looking on, the 5-year-old Henny Hughes mare came on the track following the 5:50 a.m. renovation accompanied by a pony as they jogged in tandem to the three sixteenths pole. At that point, Beholder set out on her own and jogged under control to the backside, where she settled into an even, one mile gallop.
With rain in the local forecast for tomorrow morning, Beholder did a bit of extra work as she tack-walked with a rider up under the Mandella shed prior to getting a bath.
A two-time Eclipse Award winner, Beholder won the Zenyatta for the third consecutive year while posting her ninth career Grade I win. Owned by B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm, Beholder is pointing to what looms as an epic confrontation with Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and others in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland on Oct. 31.
