PLETCHER TRAINEE FEATHERED SHIPS WEST FROM KENTUCKY FOLLOWING GRADE III TURF WIN
ARCADIA, Calif. (May 25, 2015)–Locally based Spanish Queen and New York invader Consumer Credit head a field of seven three year old fillies set to go a mile and a quarter on turf in the Grade I, $400,000 American Oaks at Santa Anita.
Trained by red-hot Richard Baltas, California-bred Spanish Queen comes off a dazzling 1 ½ length win in the Grade II, 1 1/8 miles turf Honeymoon Stakes on May 3, which was only her third career start. A first-out one mile turf maiden winner versus statebreds March 5, the Tribal Rule filly was subsequently second, beaten a neck, in the Grade III, 1 1/8 miles turf Providencia Stakes in her second start.
Owned by her breeders, Jack Nakkashian, Harry Bederian and Harout Kamberian, Spanish Queen, like the remainder of the field, will be trying a mile and a quarter for the first time on Saturday. With two win from her three starts, she has earnings of $183,600.
Conditioned by Chad Brown, Consumer Credit comes off a narrow minor stakes win going 1 1/16 miles over a yielding turf at Aqueduct April 23 and, with four wins from seven starts, would appear to have a considerable conditioning edge over Spanish Queen. Second, beaten three quarters of a length in the Grade III, 1 1/16 miles turf Florida Oaks at Tampa Bay Downs March 7, the Kentucky-bred daughter of More Than Ready was a one length winner of the Grade III, one mile turf Sweetest Chant Stakes at Gulfstream three starts back on Jan. 24.
Owned by Gary Barber, Brous Stable, LLC and Wachtel Stable, Consumer Credit, who will be piloted by Flavien Prat, is 7-4-2-0 overall with earnings of $255,445.
Brown will also send out a pair of recent turf allowance winners, Strict Compliance, who comes off a nose allowance win going 1 3/16 miles over soft turf at Keeneland April 19 and Mrs McDougal, who exits a 7 ¼ length win going one mile on a “good” turf at Aqueduct on April 24.
A Florida-bred filly by Into Mischief, Strict Compliance has two wins and a second from three starts. A Kentucky-bred daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, Mrs McDougal also has two wins from three starts on turf.
Trainer Todd Pletcher will be represented by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners’ Feathered, who comes off a gate to wire win in the Grade III, 1 1/16 miles Edgewood Stakes at Churchill Downs May 1, which was her first start on turf. A close fourth in the Grade I, 1 1/16 miles Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies five starts back Nov. 1, the Indian Charlie filly was subsequently second to eventual Eclipse Champion 2-year-old filly Take Charge Brandi in the Grade I Starlet at Los Alamitos Dec. 13. With an overall mark of 8-2-2-1, she has earnings of $400,974, the most of any Oaks entrant.
Second to Spanish Queen in the Grade II Honeymoon, trainer Doug O’Neill’s Sharla Rae has more game-day experience than anyone else in the field and she’ll try to turn the tables on Spanish Queen in her 11th career start. A Kentucky-bred daughter of Afleet Alex, Sharla Rae was third two starts back in the Grade III, one mile Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park March 21.
Owned by W.C. Racing, Sharla Rae has run at six different tracks and has one second place finish from two tries on grass. She is 10-4-1-1 overall with earnings of $223,545.
