GOLDEN STATE SERIES RACE ATTRACTS 14 CALIFORNIA-BRED OR SIRED OLDER HORSES
ARCADIA, Calif. (March 11, 2018)–With Peter Miller represented by no less than four entrants, his Richard’s Boy would appear to head a wide-open field of 11 older horses bred or sired in California in Sunday’s $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes at 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course.
With three horses on the also eligible list, the contention runs deep in the Sensational Star, prominent among those who are likely to attract ample pari-mutuel attention are Gary Barber’s homebred Fly to Mars, Nick Alexander’s homebred Tough Sunday and Reddam Racing’s homebred B Squared.
Throw in Bob Baffert’s Grade I stakes winner Masochistic, who tries turf for the first time on Sunday following a disastrous run as the 3-5 favorite in the Cal Cup Sprint Jan. 27, and the Sensational Star shapes up as a terrific betting race.
Owner: Rockingham Ranch Trainer: Peter Miller
A 6-year-old gelding by Idiot Proof, he was second, beaten a head three starts back by stablemate Stormy Liberal in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Nov. 4 and was most recently a close third in an ungraded five furlong turf stakes at Gulfstream Park Jan. 27. A well beaten third coming down Santa Anita’s hillside turf as the 2-1 favorite two starts back in the Joe Hernandez Stakes Jan. 1, Richard’s Boy is 11-2-5-2 lifetime over the course and with Drayden Van Dyke trying his hand for the first time, could go favored in what looks like a hillside raffle. The leading money earner in the field with $872,490, he’s 29-9-8-5 overall.
FLY TO MARS
Owner: Gary Barber Trainer: Peter Miller
Second, beaten one length by stablemate Calculator in the restricted Clockers’ Corner Stakes down the hill Jan. 28, this 4-year-old Minister’s Wild Cat gelding pressed the pace and went on to an impressive 2 ¼ length allowance score over the course two starts back on Dec. 31. With two wins and a second from three tries down the hill, Fly to Mars appears to be on the improve and will be ridden for the fourth time in a row by Eclipse Champion Apprentice Evin Roman, who becomes a journeyman following Sunday’s card. Out of Barber’s Doc Gus mare Warren’s Flyer, Fly to Mars figures to be forwardly placed early in his 11th career start.
Owner: Nick Alexander Trainer: Steve Miyadi
Second, beaten a neck two starts back in the Grade III Midnight Lute at six furlongs on the main track, this 6-year-old full horse by Grazen regressed in his most recent start as he ran third, beaten 7 ¼ lengths in the Cal Cup Sprint at six furlongs Jan. 27. A winner of his only start on turf, a second condition allowance going five furlongs at Del Mar three starts back on Nov. 16, he’ll be trying the hillside course for the first time on Sunday. Out of Alexander’s General Meeting mare Sunday Dress, Tough Sunday, who was orphaned at birth, has a good deal of class and will be seeking his fifth win from 18 overall starts in the Sensational Star.
Owner: Reddam Racing, LLC Trainer: Doug O’Neill
Third, beaten a head by English-bred Double Touch in a second condition allowance over the hillside turf on Feb. 23, this 4-year-old Square Eddie colt was overhauled late in a big effort that earned him a Beyer Speed figure of 90. A state-bred stakes winner over the course five starts back on Oct. 21, B Squared merits plenty of respect in what will be his 14th career start. Out of Reddam’s Ten Most Wanted mare Silar Rules, B Squared has a win and a third from two tries over the course and is 13-3-3-2 overall.
