ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 15, 2018)–With first time starter Surfing Star steaming home on top in Thursday’s eighth and final race at Santa Anita, the track’s popular Single Ticket Pick Six Jackpot was hit, resulting in a payoff of $128,292.20.
One of two “Jackpot” horses in a field of nine California-bred or sired maidens, Surfing Star, who broke from the far outside going 6 ½ furlongs, was off at 13-1 under Rajiv Maragh and paid $28.00 to win.
Purchased on-track for $810.00, the winning numbers in Thursday’s Pick Six were 5-4-2-6-1 and 10. With a Jackpot carryover from Sunday of $70,471, there was $89,133 in “new” Pick Six money wagered, accounting for a total pool of $159,604. (There were 36 tickets with five winners, resulting in a consolation payoff of $285.00).
A 3-year-old colt by Surf Cat out of the Strong Hope mare Esperanza, Surfing Star is conditioned by his co-owner and breeder, Bruce Headley, who celebrated his 84th birthday on Wednesday.
