MISS SUNSET HEADS A COMPETITIVE FIELD OF EIGHT 3-YEAR-OLD FILLIES IN SATURDAY’S $200,000 EVENING JEWEL STAKES GOING 6 ½ FURLONGS AT SANTA ANITA

EVENING JEWEL PART OF LUCRATIVE GOLDEN STATE SERIES FOR CALIFORNIA BRED OR SIRED HORSES

ARCADIA, Calif. (April 5, 2017) – Miss Sunset heads a competitive field of eight 3-year-old fillies in Saturday’s $200,000 Evening Jewel Stakes at Santa Anita sprinting six and a half furlongs on the main track. All eight entries were bred in California and thus eligible for the Golden State series of stakes races offered at The Great Race Place that specifically benefit California bred or sired horses.

Miss Sunset: The lightly raced Miss Sunset comes off a sixth place finish in the China Doll Stakes going a mile over the turf, but returns to the main track on Saturday, to a distance in which she has excelled. A winner of the downhill turf Sweet Life Stakes going 6 ½ furlongs on Feb. 12, Miss Sunset broke her maiden at first asking in July and followed that up with a 5 ¼ length romp in the 6 furlong Generous Portion Stakes at Del Mar on Aug. 27.

The only mark against the bay filly when going sprint distances came over a “muddy” main track at Santa Anita on Jan 13 in a first condition allowance that was slated to be run down the hillside turf course but came off due to weather.

Trained by Jeff Bonde and owned by Alan Klein and Philip Lebherz, Miss Sunset is by Into Mischief out of the Trippi mare, Tuscan Sunset. She is 5-3-0-0 overall with $183,930 in lifetime earnings.

Starr of Quality: Trained by Peter Miller and owned by Altamira Racing Stable, Starr of Quality will attempt a big jump in class on Saturday. Though a recent winner of her last two outings going a mile over the main track at Santa Anita, she’ll cut back in distance in hopes of winning her first race around only one turn in her first stakes effort.

Starr of Quality, by First Dude out of the Gone West mare, Gator Blitz, is 7-2-1-2 overall with $47,885 in lifetime earnings.
