MANDELLA’S RETRO HEADS WIDE OPEN FIELD OF 12 TWO YEAR OLD FILLIES IN MONDAY’S $100,000 SURFER GIRL STAKES AT MILE ON GRASS

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 6, 2017)–The 2-1 favorite in her debut going a mile on turf Sept. 4, LNJ Foxwoods’ Retro heads a wide open field of 12 (and two additional horses on the also eligible list) juvenile fillies in Monday’s $100,000 Surfer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita. Trained by Richard Mandella, the Kentucky-bred daughter of Giant’s Causeway will retain the services of Flavien Prat.

Winless in two maiden special starts at a mile on turf, trainer Keith Desormeaux’s Breezy Bee showed marked improvement on Sept. 4, as she closed much ground to be fourth, beaten three quarters of a length by Retro.

The 9-5 post time favorite, trainer Clifford Sise’s Medaglia Gold is one of four horses exiting the one mile Juvenile Fillies Turf Sept. 4. Hustled to the early lead, she tired late to be beaten 4 ¾ lengths while running 10th but was an impressive one mile turf maiden special winner two starts back.
RETRO: A $170,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase 13 months ago, this Kentucky-bred daughter of Giant’s Causeway appears capable of significant improvement and may rate the mantle of Surfer Girl favorite.

BREEZY BEE: Purchased for $60,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, this Maryland-bred daughter of Street Sense approaches the Surfer Girl in good order, as she’s improving and will be making her third start–all in conjunction with Desormeaux’s Hall of Fame brother, Kent. Off at 3-1 when fourth to Retro Sept. 4, she could put it all together on Monday. Owned by Don’t Tell My Wife Stables and Monomoy Stables, LLC, Breezy Bee will hope to be making her third start as she’ll need to draw into the race from the also eligible list.

MEDAGLIA GOLD: Owned and bred in Kentucky by Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams, this Medaglia d’Oro filly was an impressive one mile turf gate to wire maiden winner two starts back on July 29. Although well beaten after going to the front in her most recent, she’ll likely employ similar tactics in the Surfer Girl with Edwin Maldonado once again at the controls in what will be her fifth career start.

MOON DASH: An unknown commodity, this Malibu Moon filly was a first-out maiden winner going 7 ½ furlongs on turf at Delaware Park on Sept. 9 and will get the services of “Big Money” Mike Smith in her Southern California debut Monday. Trained by Mike Stidham and owned by Speedway Stable, LLC, Moon Dash pressed the pace in her debut and drove to an impressive half length win. It would be no surprise to see her contending for the early lead in what will be her second career start.

KLOSTERS: A six furlong turf maiden winner two starts back on June 16 in England, this Irish-bred filly made her U.S. debut in the Juvenile Fillies Turf Sept. 4, rallying from off the pace to finish fourth, beaten a length at 6-1. Trained by Doug O’Neill and owned by Great Friends Stable, LLC, Sterling Stables or Steven Keh, Klosters is one of many who could show marked improvement and thus be a big factor to win on Monday.

ONE FAST BROAD: Owned and trained by Mick Ruis, this California-bred daughter of Decarchy rallied from off the pace in the Juvenile Fillies Turf Sept. 4 to finish second, beaten just a half length. A first out one mile turf maiden winner versus Cal-breds on Aug. 4, she’ll be out to prove her Juvenile Turf finish was no fluke as she faces open company for the second time in what will be her third start–all in conjunction with Corey Nakatani.
