IRISH-BRED ANITA PARTNER CONTINUES HILLSIDE ROMANCE WITH 3 ¼ LENGTH WIN IN $58,000 SANTA ANITA ALLOWANCE FEATURE UNDER BAZE; TRAINED BY MULLINS, SHE GETS 6 ½ FURLONGS ON TURF IN 1:13.43

ARCADIA, Calif. (May 4, 2017)–Closer than expected early, Irish-bred Anita Partner registered a mild upset in winning Thursday’s $58,000 Santa Anita allowance feature by 3 ¼ lengths, while notching her third win in her last four starts, three coming over Santa Anita’s unique hillside layout.  Ridden by Tyler Baze and trained by Jeff Mullins, she negotiated the 6 ½ furlongs on turf in 1:13.43.

Anita Partner actually crossed the wire first two races back on March 16, but was disqualified and placed second.

Breaking from the rail in a field of six fillies and mares three and up on Thursday, Anita Partner was head and head for the lead at the dirt crossing turning for home and quickly opened up to win easily. Off at 3-1, she paid $8.80, $4.40 and $2.40.

“I was a little surprised she was up that close, but they were going slow,” said Mullins, in reference to interior fractions of 22.79, 45.27 and 1:07.60.  “Tyler knows her, he works her and he knew what he was doing.  I think she’ll go a mile.”

A 5-year-old mare, Anita Partner, who is owned by Wong or Stavropoulos, improved her overall record to 12-4-2-1, and with the winner’s share of $34,800, she increased her earnings to $120,993.

Ridden by Tiago Pereira, Indriya was sent from the gate, was on terms with the winner early and gamely held favored Ponder Lea at bay through the stretch drive, finishing second by 1 ¼ lengths.  Off at 9-1, she paid $9.40 and $4.00.

Ponder Lea, bet to 3-2 favoritism under Corey Nakatani in her turf debut, paid $2.80 to show.
