WYGOD’S HOMEBRED SPRING LILY COMES OFF POWERFUL MAIDEN WIN SPRINTING
ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 28, 2018)–Bob Baffert’s undefeated Dream Tree and Bill Spawr’s nearly perfect Midnight Bisou renew their rivalry as they head a field of six 3-year-old fillies going a mile and one sixteenth in Saturday’s Grade III, $100,000 Santa Ysabel Stakes at Santa Anita.
A nose victress over Midnight Bisou three starts back, Dream Tree comes off a facile 3 ¾ length win in the Grade II Las Virgenes going one mile here on Feb. 4 and unbeaten in four starts. A galloping 4 ½ length winner of Grade II Santa Ynez Stakes going seven furlongs on Jan. 7, Midnight Bisou was twice beaten a nose by Dream Tree and will be out to turn the tables as she tries two turns for the first time in what will be her fourth career start.
In addition to the top two, Pam and Martin Wygod’s speedy homebred Spring Lily, who comes off a five-length maiden score sprinting, looks to be the speed of the race and looms dangerous from the John Shirreffs barn.

Heavily favored in all four starts, Dream Tree held Midnight Bisou off by a desperate nose in her first-out maiden win going six furlongs on Oct. 27. The even money favorite in the seven furlong Desi Arnaz Stakes Nov. 18 at Del Mar, she once again sped to the early lead and prevailed by a nose over “Midnight,” who finished 5 ¼ lengths clear of the third horse. A 3 ¼ length winner of the Grade I Starlet going a mile and one sixteenth at Los Alamitos two starts back, this Kentucky-bred daughter of Uncle Mo has rated kindly in both of her two turn assignments and will be favored again on Saturday. A $750,000 Fasig Tipton Florida Select March 2-year-Old in Training Sale purchase, Dream Tree will be ridden for the fifth consecutive time by Drayden Van Dyke.

A Kentucky-bred filly by Midnight Lute who sold for a bargain $80,000 last April at the Ocala Breeders’ Spring 2-Year-Old in Training Sale, she was ridden for the first time by Mike Smith in the Jan. 7 Santa Ynez and retains his highly coveted services in the Santa Ysabel. Tractable in all three of her sprints, Midnight Bisou should have no trouble stretching out and should be able to adjust to any pace scenario. With six works to her credit since winning the Santa Ynez, her most recent drill was a seven furlong move in 1:27.80 on Feb. 23. With Smith aboard, her connections are optimistic they can turn the tables on Dream Tree.

Well beaten at first asking Nov. 12, this Union Rags filly came back to drill six rivals going 6 ½ furlongs here in a restricted maiden special weight race on Feb. 4, winning in gate to wire fashion while earning a solid Beyer Speed figure of 88. Bred in Kentucky by Emily Wygod, Spring Lily will be trying winners and two turns for the first time in the Santa Ysabel and could pose an elusive target if granted an uncontested lead with leading man Evin Roman aboard.
