HARD HITTING AVICII IS DOMINANT IN $58,000 SANTA ANITA ALLOWANCE WIN UNDER PRAT; TRAINED BY MILLER, SHE WINS BY 3 ¼ LENGTHS AND GETS 6 ½ FURLONGS IN 1:16.07

ARCADIA, Calif. (May 25, 2017)–The only horse entered for an optional claiming tag of $62,500, the Peter Miller-conditioned Avicii was much best in taking Thursday’s $58,000 Santa Anita allowance feature by 3 ¼ lengths under Flavien Prat as she got 6 ½ furlongs in 1:16.07.

Lapped on favored Shy Carmelita around the far turn, Avicii, a 6-year-old Kentucky-bred mare by City Zip, took command a quarter mile out and was “home and dry” a furlong from home.

Haltered for $40,000 two starts back by Miller, she came off a second place performance in a first level allowance, optional $40,000 claimer on May 6 and was off as the 9-5 second choice today in a second condition race that attracted a field of five fillies and mares three and up, she paid $5.80, $3.20 and $2.20.

“We thought she was claim-proof today and she was,” said Miller.  “Honestly, this race came up soft.  There weren’t any Bafferts or Hollendorfers on their way up to the stakes level.  We’ll consider running her back at this level next time.  She’s just a wonderful mare.”

Owned by Rockingham Ranch, who lost Avicii via a $40,000 claim three starts back on March 4, improved her overall record to 29-7-9-6.  With the winner’s share of $34,800, she increased her earnings to $311,835.

Ridden by Edwin Maldonado, Shy Carmelita, the actual favorite at 9-5, finished second, 2 ¼ lengths clear of Cuddle Alert and paid $3.00 and $2.40.

With Agapito Delgadillo up, Cuddle Alert was off at 9-2 and paid $2.60 to show.

Fractions on the race were 22.68, 45.91 and 1:09.72.

Racing resumes at Santa Anita on Friday with first post time for an eight-race card at 1 p.m.  Admission gates open at 11 a.m.
