ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 1, 2015)–A handy winner last out at Del Mar, trainer Simon Callaghan’s Taris heads a field of five going 6 ½ furlongs in Sunday’s Grade III, $100,000 LA Woman Stakes at Santa Anita. Quick from the gate, Taris drew the advantageous outside post and will likely be on or near the lead under Gary Stevens, who guided her to a 2 ¾ length win last out in the Grade III, 6 ½ furlong Rancho Bernardo Handicap on Aug. 16.
Owned by John Magnier, Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor, the 4-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by Flatter is a bona fide top sprinter with five wins and a second from seven starts. Her only off the board effort came at Oaklawn Park in a Grade III Stakes at 1 1/16 miles five starts back in March of 2014. She has earnings of $395,700.
A three-time stakes winner, California-bred Uzziel comes off a 4 ¼ length win in the restricted CERF Stakes at six furlongs on Sept. 6 and will hope to replicate her career-best 100 Beyer Speed figure on Sunday. Trained by Keith Desormeaux and owned by her breeders, James and Tammy McKenney, the 4-year-old filly by Harlington has an impressive overall mark of 18-5-3-3, with earnings of $317,488.
In just her second start for high percentage Richard Baltas, Unforgettable U comes off a 7 ¼ length win in a first condition allowance going six furlongs and merits respect as an up and coming sort. Owned and bred by Mojallali Stables, Inc., the 4-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by Tale of the Cat has two wins and three seconds from nine starts. She has career earnings of $105,958 and has posted lofty “Beyers” of 100 and 99 in her two starts for Baltas.
The field for the LA Woman, to be run as the third race on a nine-race card Sunday with jockeys and weights in post position order: Unforgettable U, Edwin Maldonado, 118; Ben’s Duchess, Joe Talamo, 116; Wasted at Midnight, Martin Garcia, 118; Uzziel, Kent Desormeaux, 118, and Taris, Gary Stevens, 123.
