ARCADIA, Calif. (May 18, 2014)–With an expanded racing calendar that calls for live racing in Arcadia through June 29, Santa Anita Park operated as a live racing entity on Preakness Stakes Day for the first time ever Saturday, resulting in significant increases in both attendance and handle when compared to last year’s figures at the now-shuttered Hollywood Park.
–Santa Anita’s on-track attendance yesterday was 21,011, up from last year’s 6,608, a staggering increase of 218 percent.
–On-track handle at Santa Anita on Saturday was $3,441,843, up from last year’s $1,954,230, an increase of 76 percent.
–Santa Anita’s total Preakness Day handle of $17,441,960 was up over last year’s $14,002,863, an increase of 25 percent.
“These numbers are obviously very gratifying, but while we’re pleased that California Chrome won and our business was solid, we’re hoping to learn from yesterday and build upon what we’ve been able to establish,” said Santa Anita President Tom Ludt. “It’s difficult to quantify what California Chrome is doing for our entire industry right now, but he’s had a very positive impact, no question.
“Moving forward, we’re hoping to have a tremendous day here on June 7, Belmont Day, and it’s just incredible that we have any horse with a shot at the Triple Crown, let alone a Cal-bred like this who has truly become the people’s horse.”
Santa Anita offers free Infield Area admission and parking via Gate 6 off of Colorado Place each weekend and the track will host a variety of Belmont Day events on June 7 as well. For more information on Belmont Stakes Day at Santa Anita, please visit santaanita.com, or call (626) 574-RACE.
