RAPIDLY IMPROVING IRISH-BRED TO BE POINTED TO $200,000 PASADENA STAKES MARCH 17
ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 8, 2018)–With a powerful turn of foot, heavily favored River Boyne rallied four-wide through the stretch to win Thursday’s $56,000 Santa Anita allowance feature by 2 ¾ lengths under Flavien Prat. Owned by Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal, LLC, Irish-bred River Boyne got one mile on turf in 1:34.51.
“He’s got a great kick,” said Prat, who had ridden River Boyne to a dazzling come from behind, five length maiden win going 1 1/8 miles on turf here on Dec. 26. “He broke sharp and he put me right into the race and then he finished like he did. Very impressive.”
Second in his U.S. debut going a flat mile on turf at Del Mar Nov. 24, River Boyne was off at 6-5 in a field of 10 three year olds and paid $4.60, $3.00 and $2.80.
“I think we’ll look at the Pasadena ($200,000, mile turf on March 17) next,” said Mullins. “It looked like he stumbled a little (leaving the starting gate) but he recovered quick. He’s got a serious turn of foot.”
With the winner’s share of $33,600, River Boyne increased his earnings to $83,528 while improving his overall mark to 6-2-2-0.
Forwardly placed throughout, Kylemore overtook pacesetter Platinum Equity to finish second by a half length. Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Kylemore was off at 7-1 and paid $6.40 and $4.20.
Platinum Equity, who darted to the lead into the first turn, was wide down the backside while running a bit greenly under Geovanni Franco. Off at 12-1, he paid $7.00 to show.
Fractions on the race were 23.37, 46.95, 1:10.73 and 1:22.82.
First post time for a nine-race card on Friday is at 1 p.m. Admission gates open at 11 a.m.
