DAILY RACING FORM’S JAY HOVDEY TO SIGN ‘LONG REIN’ AT SANTA ANITA ON SEPT. 27; MULTIPLE ECLIPSE AWARD WINNER TO BE IN EAST PADDOCK GARDENS BEGINNING AT 11 A.M.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Sept. 17, 2014)–Daily Racing Form’s Jay Hovdey will be on-hand to sign his most recent book “Long Rein: Tales from the World of Horse Racing,” in Santa Anita’s East Paddock Gardens on Saturday, Sept. 27 beginning at 11 a.m.

A four-time Eclipse Award winner, Hovdey is regarded by many as the best and most erudite columnist in American racing. “Long Rein” is a compilation of 81 columns and features gleaned from Hovdey’s work in Daily Racing Form.

Included in this must-have anthology are revealing stories depicting Thoroughbreds and racing stalwarts such as Smarty Jones, Cigar, Barbaro, Tiznow, John Henry, Affirmed, Charlie Whittingham, Gary Stevens, Bill Hartack, Bill Shoemaker, Rosie Napravnik, Pat Day, Chris Antley and Bobby Frankel.

“There are some stories that stay with a writer long after the writing,” Hovdey said of his “Long Rein” selections. “It’s my hope a collection like this finds its way into the hands of fans of all ages, and for years to come.”

Hovdey has also penned two other racing biographies: “Whittingham–A Thoroughbred Racing Legend,” and “Cigar–America’s Horse.” Prior to joining Daily Racing Form in 1998, Hovdey wrote for the BloodHorse, Thoroughbred Record, and his work has also appeared in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Reader’s Digest.

Sept. 27 is Breeders’ Cup Challenge Day at Santa Anita, as The Great Race Place will offer five Grade I Breeders’ Cup “Win & You’re In” stakes, highlighted by the $300,000 Awesome Again, which is expected to attract the nation’s current top-rated 3-year-old, the undefeated Shared Belief.

Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Shared Belief was last year’s Eclipse Award winning Juvenile colt. He comes off a smashing win in the Grade I Pacific Classic and is pointing to the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita on Nov. 1.

Admission gates will open early on Sept. 27 at 10:30 a.m. and there will be a special early first post time of 12:30 p.m. For more information on Santa Anita’s upcoming Autumn Meet, which gets underway on Friday, Sept. 26, please visit santaanita.com, or call (626) 574-RACE.
