CALVERT STREET PROVES TENACIOUS LATE & TAKES $56,000 SANTA ANITA ALLOWANCE FEATURE BY A HALF LENGTH UNDER TOP APPRENTICE ROMAN, TRAINED BY KRULJAC, HE GETS 6 ½ FURLONGS DOWN HILLSIDE TURF IN 1:13.96

 

FIELD OF SEVEN CALIFORNIA-BRED OR SIRED HORSES TAKE SHOT AT LUCRATIVE PURSE

 

ARCADIA, Calif. (June 23, 2017)–Full of run while a close second turning for home, trainer Eric Kruljac’s Calvert Street was tenacious through the drive as he held Cheekaboomboom at bay to take Friday’s $56,000 allowance feature by a half length.  Ridden by top apprentice Evin Roman, Calvert Street negotiated 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course in 1:13.96.

A close fifth over the course on May 19, Calvert Street was off at 7-1 in a field of seven California bred or sired 3-year-olds and up and paid $17.40, $5.80 and $3.80.

A 4-year-old gelding by Slew’s Tiznow, Calvert Street is out of the Harlan’s Holiday mare, Harlan Express.  Owned by James P. Abel, Calvert Street is now 13-4-2-2.  With the winner’s check of $33,600, he increased his earnings to $77,815.

Ridden by Gary Stevens, Cheekaboomboom made a big late run while wide-out and finished three quarters of a length in front of Eichel.  The second choice at 9-5, Cheekaboomboom paid $3.20 and $3.00.

Eichel, who was ridden by Tyler Baze, overtook early leader A New Trend at the dirt crossing three sixteenths of a mile from home and finished third, 1 ¼ lengths in front of Senator Robert.  Off at  7-1, Eichel paid $3.60 to show.

The 3-2 post time favorite with Edwin Maldonado up, A New Trend tired to finish sixth.

Fractions on the race were 22.29, 44.54 and 1:07.87.
