CALIFORNIA-BRED ASHLEYLUVSSUGAR PRESSES PACE EN ROUTE TO VICTORY IN $60,000 ‘YOU CAN’T MAKE IT UP’ ALLOWANCE PURSE; SMITH, EURTON TEAM FOR 1 ¾ LENGTH WIN ON GRASS

PICK SIX CARRYOVER OF $49,133 INTO FRIDAY, TOTAL POOL SHOULD EXCEED $300,000

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 5, 2015)–Longshot Ashleyluvssugar pressed the pace from his outside post position and went on to an authoritative 1 ¾ length win in Thursday’s $60,000 “You Can’t Make It Up” allowance purse at Santa Anita, as he covered 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:47.10 under Mike Smith.

Trained by Peter Eurton, the 4-year-old California-bred gelding by Game Plan pressed French-bred Sofast into and around the far turn, took a narrow advantage at the top of the lane and widened late on even money favorite Talco.

Off at 8-1 in a field of eight older horses, Ashleyluvssugar paid $19.20, $5.80 and $4.00.

“This was my first time on him on the turf, and he might be better on this than on synthetic,” said Smith. “I think it may be time to see if he can win a stake.”

Owned by his breeders, Sharon Alesia, Bran Jam Stable and Ciaglia Racing, LLC, Ashleyluvssugar won for the first time in three tries on turf and improved his overall mark to 9-4-0-2. With the winner’s share of $46,800, he increased his earnings to $215,504.

“This is the first time he’s had a chance to really show himself on turf,” said Eurton. “He needs something tight (surface-wise). He’s not a big horse. He uses all of his energy trying to get through dirt and he couldn’t do it last time out (when sixth, beaten 11 ¾ lengths on a wet fast surface Jan. 11).”

French-bred Talco, who exited a close fifth place run in the Grade II Mathis Brothers Mile (turf) on Dec. 26, was next to last around the Club House turn, pulled his way into contention turning for home while five-wide, but flattened out to finish second, a nose in front of Jules Journey.

Off at even money, he paid $2.60 and $2.40.

Jules Journey, ridden by Santiago Gonzalez, was mid-pack after the first half mile and just missed the place. Off at 10-1, he paid $4.20 to show.

There is a Pick Six carryover of $49,133 into Friday and it’s expected Friday’s total pool will exceed $300,000. First post time for an eight-race card is at 1 p.m. Admission gates open at 11 a.m.
