BIG JOHN B, INFOBEDAD & BEACH VIEW ALL PROMINENT IN SUNDAY’S GRADE III, $100,000 TOKYO CITY CUP AT 1 ½ MILES
ARCADIA, Calif. (March 30, 2017)–Defending champ Big John B and recent local winners Infobedad and Beach View head a field of six older horses in Sunday’s Grade III, $100,000 Tokyo City Cup, to be run at a mile and one half.
To be run for the 61st time on Sunday, the Tokyo City Cup, originally known as the San Bernardino Handicap from 1957 through 2004, will be the centerpiece of Japan Family Day at Santa Anita.
BIG JOHN B: An impressive 2 ¼ length winner of the Tokyo City on April 3, 2016, this 8-year-old Florida-bred gelding by Hard Spun was unraced from that point until running an even fifth here in a 1 1/8 miles turf classified allowance on March 9, a race he no doubt needed. Trained by Phil D’Amato and owned by Michael House, Big John B is a dedicated deep closer and would be well served by fast early splits. He’ll again be ridden by Rafael Bejarano, who has been aboard in nine out of his last 10 starts, winning four of them. With an overall mark of 41-15-6-5, he has career earnings of $851,030.
INFOBEDAD: Trained by John Sadler and campaigned primarily on turf in his eight Southern California starts, this 6-year-old Argentine-bred comes off a sharp first condition allowance score going a mile and a quarter on dirt here March 11 and can be expected to go to the early lead Sunday in what will be his first try at a mile and one half. Owned by Hronis Racing, LLC, he’ll again be ridden by Tyler Baze, who was also up for a 26 ½ length score over a wet fast track three starts back when entered for a $25,000 claiming tag. Infobedad is 28-6-2-3 with earnings of $108,825.
BEACH VIEW: The up and comer in the Tokyo City field, he’s won two out of his last three starts on turf, but ran a good third in his debut going six furlongs on dirt in a maiden special weight race at Monmouth Park four starts back on Aug. 7. A 4-year-old Maryland-bred colt by Giant’s Causeway, Beach View will be making his stakes debut in his third start for trainer Leonard Powell. Ridden by Stewart Elliott in his two local tries, he showed a good turn of foot in both starts at a mile and a quarter on turf, winning his most recent on March 12 by 1 ¼ lengths as the 7-2 favorite. Owned by Levy Racing, Beach View, in his first try at a mile and a half, is another who would benefit from a fast early pace. His overall mark stands at 4-2-1-1 and he has earnings of $78,400.
