ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 1, 2018)–Under patient handling from Rajiv Maragh, favored Pantsonfire launched a late rally to overtake longshot Causeforcommotion and win Thursday’s $56,000 Santa Anita allowance feature by three quarters of a length. Trained by Richard Baltas, the 4-year-old Irish-bred filly got a mile and one eighth on turf in 1:47.23.
An unhurried fifth midway around the far turn, Pantsonfire wheeled four-wide turning for home and displayed an impressive turn of foot while hand-ridden through the wire.
“We told Rajiv to wait,” said Baltas. “‘Please wait. Don’t worry about losing ground.'”
Safe to say–Mission accomplished.
Sixth, beaten five lengths here in the Grade I American Oaks at a mile and a quarter on turf Dec. 30, Pantsonfire was off as the 9-5 favorite in a field of 10 older fillies and mares and paid $5.80, $3.00 and $2.60.
“That’s her style and we didn’t want to change too much,” said Maragh, who had ridden her in the American Oaks. “I was pretty confident in her ability and that’s the way she wants to run.”
Owned by Next Wave Racing and Starry Night Racing, Pantsonfire, in her sixth start for Baltas, improved her overall mark to 10-2-2-1. With the winner’s share of $33,600, she increased her earnings to $85,674.
Ridden by Evin Roman, Causeforcommotion was attentive to the pace, grabbed the lead a sixteenth of a mile out, but was second best, finishing two lengths in front of Bombilate.
Off at 10-1, Causeforcommotion paid $7.20 and $4.00.
Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Bombilate paid $3.60 to show.
Fractions on the race were 23.48, 47.38, 1:10.91 and 1:35.17.
Racing resumes on Friday with an eight race card. First post time is 1 p.m. and admission gates open at 11 a.m.
