ARCADIA, Calif. (March 17, 2017)–Ike Walker rallied five-wide turning for home en route to a three quarter length win in Friday’s $58,000 allowance feature at Santa Anita. Ridden by Flavien Prat and trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, “Ike” got a flat mile in 1:36.85.
Well in-hand just off a five-horse spread going into the Club House turn, the 5-year-old Bellamy Road gelding, attentive to the pace throughout, was about two lengths off the lead with a quarter mile to run and was put into high gear for the stretch run.
Claimed two starts back for $50,000 on Jan. 1, Ike Walker was a well beaten third here in the Grade II, six furlong Palos Verdes Stakes on Feb. 4. Dispatched at 7-2 in a field of seven older horses, he paid $9.20, $4.40 and $2.80.
Owned by C T R Stables, LLC, Hollendorfer and Dr. Michael Sigband, “Ike” picked up $34,800 for the win, increasing his bankroll to $272,415 from an overall mark of 28-8-4-5.
English-bred River Echo, who broke from the rail, was attentive to the pace and saved ground throughout, had to wait for room between horses turning for home and finished as though he could’ve been head and head with the winner had he found clear sailing sooner.
Ridden by Norberto Arroyo, Jr., River Echo, who finished 2 ¼ lengths in front of Texas Two Step, was off at 7-2 and paid $4.60 and $3.20.
Texas Two Step, who dueled for the lead from the opening bell, made a head lead after a half mile and finished a length in front of Got Even. He was off at 7-2 with Tyler Baze and paid $3.60 to show.
Fractions on the race were 23.13, 46.73, 1:11.26 and 1:24.06.
