QUOTES FROM CONNECTIONS OF R SUNDAY SURPRISE, FULL SISTER TO CALIFORNIA CHROME, WHO RAN THIRD IN HER DEBUT THURSDAY AT SANTA ANITA

RAFAEL BEJARANO, R SUNDAY SURPRISE, THIRD: “She was moving around a little just when the gates opened. That’s why she kinda missed the break. She ran good.”

DOUG O’NEILL, R SUNDAY SURPRISE: “She ran great. She’s only gonna get better from here.”

STEVE COBURN, CO-BREEDER & CO-OWNER R SUNDAY SURPRISE: “I’ll take that! She jumped a little at the break and finished up real nice. I’m still going to get my picture taken, because Larry Williams owns the winner (You’re Late) and he owns Lucky Pulpit (sire of California Chrome and R Sunday Surprise) and he’s a friend. I just talked to him on the phone and I said ‘She won.’ He said, ‘Your filly or mine?'”

Note: Breaking from post position three in a field of eight 2-year-old maiden fillies bred or sired in California, first time starter R Sunday Surprise, a full sister to 2014 Santa Anita and Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome, hopped at the break going five furlongs, was next to last going into the far turn and finished well to be third, beaten 4 ½ lengths by another daughter of Lucky Pulpit, You’re Late. Well fancied, R Sunday Surprise was the 6-5 favorite on debut.

Bred by her owners, Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams, You’re Late, who was ridden by Stewart Elliot, was making her second start and paid $13.00 to win.
