Handicapping Picks for 01/28/2012
Race #9 - Rating = 2
#6 Rumor - Fair odds 7/5
#7 Sugarinthemorning - Fair odds 5/2
#3 Teddy's Promise - Fair odds 5/2
Rumor ran faster winning the Kalookan Queen Handicap on New Year’s Day over the track (104 Equibase Speed Figure) than Teddy’s Promise ran winning the Grade 1 La Brea Handicap one day earlier (100 figure), and in addition Rumor was beating 4 year olds and upward while Teddy’s Promise was winning against just 4 year olds. That may not be much separation, but when you consider that Rumor is making her 2nd start off a 4 month layoff and has never been worse than 2nd in7 races, winning 4, as well as gets a good outside post, she has to be given the edge to earn her first graded stakes win today. Sugarinthemorning was 2 ¼ lengths behind Teddy’s Promise when 2nd in the La Brea, a fine effort and her first ever on a conventional dirt surface. Getting a five pound shift in the weight versus the horse that beat her and also being outside of her today whereas she was inside last out, might prove enough to turn the tables on that one today, but noting she still has to improve to beat Rumor. Teddy’s Promise has no real knocks as she’s now won 3 in a row, the last two with Espinoza up as today and of course the most recent at this grade 1 level. As such, we can’t discount her chances of winning and she has to be included on any pick 3 or 4 tickets we play at the very least.
