Handicapping Picks for 01/02/2012

3rd Race: Claiming (20-18)
Admittedly, I've been a big fan of 7-Edgewick Road for a while, but he fits in this incredibly competitive claiming event: beyond him making his 2nd start for Periban after just missing last time out, this horse loves this track (6-1-3-0). Gary Stute knew how to get him mentally able to win, so #fingerscrossed Jorge can do the same. For exotics: 2-Deluxe Bus, 5-Gibson Home Run, and 1-Preferred Mandate .

8th race: G3 Monrovia
10-Unzip Me and the talented 1-Mizdirection headline, though I think we're going to hear a lot from the near-white daughter of Wildcat Heir: 4-Wild Mia, who has speed and is cutting back from routes to the downhill course (an angle that has proven profitable over the years).

Unzip Me is interesting because she was all-but retired after the Cal Cup and was supposed to be sold at one of the broodmare sales in Kentucky in October; instead, she was put back into training and has been working lights out. Before she worked over the Hollywood Park lawn to work on 12/4, she stood with her pony near the wire and looked back at the grandstand as if to say "Where are all my fans? Don't they know how fabulous I am?" Then she proceeded to work an easy half-mile on our watch in 13.2, 27.1, and 50.3 well in hand and galloping out very strong.

Rooting against Unzip Me is like boo'ing a video of baby kittens ~ you just can't do it.
