ARCADIA, Calif. (March 25, 2009) – Benefiting from his route and grass experience, 19-10 favorite Herr Mozart rallied from last on Wednesday to score by a head over African Gray in Santa Anita’s featured $53,336 Prime Rand Purse for 3-year-olds at one mile on turf.

Zayat Stable’s Kentucky-bred son of Mr. Greeley, ridden by Garrett Gomez, surged at the wire following his run on the extreme outside to gain his first victory on turf in five tries that had included a second and two thirds.

African Gray, who had taken the lead momentarily in the stretch with Michael Baze aboard, held on for second, 2 ¼ lengths ahead of third-place When We Met and jockey Joel Rosario.

Herr Mozart covered the distance in a creditable 1:34.89 after pace-setter Aquicksting had carved out some rapid fractions while leading into the stretch and then fading to fourth in the field of six.

The winner paid $5.80, $3.40 and $2.20 while African Gray returned $3.80 and $2.60. The show mutuel on When We Met was $2.80.

A $260,000 sales purchase at Keeneland as a yearling, Herr Mozart’s win was his second in four starts at Santa Anita this season after being transferred to the stable of Bob Baffert.

Since beginning his career with three races in the East including a third-place debut at Saratoga last August in the With Anticipation Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on turf, Herr Mozart had raced exclusively at route distances.

The winning purse of $31,200 in the Prime Rand elevated his earnings to $84,866 from an overall record of 2-1-2 in seven career starts.

Racing continues on Thursday at Santa Anita with an eight-race program that gets underway at 1 p.m.
