At the ripe old age of eight, this Robertino Diodoro trainee no doubt has lost a step or two but he has competed against some pretty salty types so we aren’t ready to throw in the towel on him just yet. Today he’s in with statebreds, owns a solid lifetime record here at Santa Anita and will get the hot riding bugboy with five pounds off. His recent a.m. drills indicate he’s still got some life left in him. There is also some value at 4/1 on the morning line.

CALLED TO SERVE (#4)

Is one of three horses that will making their first start over the lawn this afternoon and one is a first-time starter. This three-year-old colt by Afleet Alex may not have appreciated the wet/fast surface he ran over last time so we’ll toss out that effort. His debut try however when third to Fed Biz and Zack n’Mat is a different scenario by far. Sent postward at 37/1, he outran his odds in a big way to two very promising colts and then was bet down in his next start to go off a 3/1. Drawing a line through that effort due to the track condition, he appears today going 1 1/8 miles on the lawn and will have the patient handling of Mike Smith getting the leg up. With route breeding and turf breeding in his blood, he figures to get the trip for his new connections and figures to be very tough to deal with here.

Is improving with each and every start for the Richard Mandella stable. The three-year-old filly by Pleasant Tap (Pleasant Colony) ran a bang up second behind Indigo River last time, her first time out vs. winners. Her previous effort was a visually impressive maiden win, defeating Bluegrass Story who came back to win in her next start. In her debut run she faced Charm the Maker while a sharp third. Stretching out to a flat mile today, she’ll remain on the lawn and also retains Joe Talamo. While breaking from the outside is of some concern, she has shown enough tactical speed to get good position early on and should the pace come up slow, she could be sent to the lead. With the rails being up 24 feet that wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Secondly, his last was a sharp, better-than-looked effort with the winner, Luckarack, coming back to run a sharp 4th at 40/1 in Monday’s Malibu Stakes. The son of Roman Ruler continues to work well in the mornings and will give a good account of himself coming down-the-hill this afternoon.

Biggest obstacle here is the post. Or is it? The two-year-old gelded son of Tribal Rule (Storm Cat) came running late to just miss after being well supported in his debut. Joe Talamo returns to ride the Paul Aguirre trained gelding and Talamo will simply need to break and get himself a clear path to run which should be accomplished from the outside post. It’s also noteworthy that he did encounter some trouble at the break to lose position and we are also encouraged by Exotic Slew (3rd) coming back to win his next start. Continued work pattern in the a.m. gives him the edge in this maiden special weight.

May offer some value here. First off, moving inside from the outside, this three-year-old Friends Lake filly was well bet in her debut and didn’t disappoint. With a solid third place effort, she showed good speed and battled gamely to the end. While being caught 5-wide it wasn’t a bad debut and with an alert break today and a race under her belt she could find herself alone on the lead and take ‘em all the way. This race is filled with several that appear to be career maidens.

We did like him quite a bit last time and while he didn’t disappoint, his third place finish as the pick didn’t sit well with the chalk players. With steadily improving numbers and Martin Pedroza riding back, we look for a winning effort in this relatively easy maiden claiming event to close out the Sunday card.

Coming off a dull but albeit troubled journey, we give the push here to the daughter of Benchmark.

Is in her best form since arriving in the U.S. and is coming off a sharp runner-up effort and her previous try was a sharp win vs. two levels higher than she faces today. There isn’t a finer claiming trainer on the grounds and it appears that trainer Mike Mitchell has her spotted to be tough right back. Since arriving here earlier in the year, this three-year-old filly was highly regarded and did compete in some graded races before she was lowered to a more realistic level. Since she has found her niche, look for her to be competitive at or around this level and offer a big effort this afternoon.

Has she blown a wheel since her last? We doubt it and with the solid 36% working for us first off the claim for Mitchell make a strong play in the exotics.

Coming off a visually impressive win on September 17th at Fairplex Park, the seven year-old gelding is spotted for the action under Martin Pedroza who returns to ride the Michael Pender trainee. He likes to win races, with a 15 from 37 career win mark and figures to win his third straight race.

With a snappy drill over the course on October 21 in 1:13 2/5 we look for him to earn his maiden diploma to kick off the Friday action.

The Melody Conlon trainee had a rough trip in a better-than-looked effort while encountering traffic trouble late behind the talented Drill. The son of Scat Daddy will try the down-the-hill turf course and is bred to handle the trip and he continues to work well in the morning. We give him the push in this spot and like seeing Mike Smith showing up to ride. Look for much improvement this afternoon.

When this Bob Baffert trainee was last seen at Del Mar he was dispatched at 9/1 and certainly outran his odds in a troubled debut try. Under Rafael Bejarano, who returns to ride today, the three-year-old colt by Indian Charlie (In Excess) didn’t break all that alertly and then was pushed wide into the stretch. Still he finished nicely for the show dough and galloped out nicely past the wire. With a race under his belt and the outside post in which to stalk, he figures to improve on the stretch out second time out.
