2012 Stall Application

Eddie Wilson

Eddie Wilson began his handicapping career with the horses, picnicking from the infield at Santa Anita each Sunday afternoon with family and friends in the mid-1970's while attending junior high school in the San Gabriel Valley, minutes away from Santa Anita race track. He could often be seen carrying a Racing Form in his back pocket to classes and reading the "sheets" at lunch time.

While wagering $2 show bets through his family, he graduated to win and place wagers and then dabbled in $5 exacta boxes while mentored by an old family friend. Two-dollar daily double plays were also a popular wager for him.

"I guess you could say I was bitten by the bug at an early age," Wilson says. "My father and older brother fanned the flame too and we always had some sort of action each racing day, either through early bird or sneaking out to the track during the day to catch the nightcap. Had I put as much time and effort into my school work as I did reading the Racing Form, I may be on the Supreme Court bench now."

Wilson got his start as a professional handicapper at the San Gabriel Valley Tribune in the late 1980s and continues his handicapping today with the LANG newspaper group. A self-professed speed handicapper who relies on trip and trouble notes, Wilson was the Santa Anita Fans Forum winner in 1991-1992, an annual contest that includes all public handicappers.

FRIDAY, MARCH 30
SEVENTH RACE:
CHOSEN MIRACLE (#3)

Has certainly found a home on the Santa Anita hillside turf course and looks like the one to beat right back. Making her third start into her comeback, Joe Talamo will return to ride and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer has her firing on all cylinders right now and she shows no disruptions in her work pattern.

THURSDAY, MARCH 29

SEVENTH RACE:

HOLLADAY ROAD (#4)

Ran huge in the Santa Anita Handicap when checking in fourth on March 3 and will face much softer vs. this crew this afternoon. The cagey veteran conditioner Julio Canani will add jock Garret Gomez to the mix and Gomez is quite familiar with this veteran seven-year-old gelding having been aboard three races back when winning over at Hollywood Park. He’s come back with two drills since the ‘Big Cap, with a sharp move in :35 3/5 on March 15 and we’ll give the son of Street Cry the push in this event.

SECOND RACE:

CAPTURE THE CALL (#2)

Got back on the beam last time with another win which leaves this six-year-old with seven wins from 28 lifetime starts. Re-claimed by trainer Terry Knight out of his last, Eswan Flores rides this afternoon and this gelding looks tough here on the lead with the 5 pound apprentice allowance.

SECOND RACE:

GAB POWER (#1)

FRIDAY, MARCH 23

FOURTH RACE:

STRATIFY (#4)

No doubt that this three-year-old colt by A.P. Indy will have to have his running shoes on to beat the morning line favorite but we’ll give the Eoin Harty trainee the push as he is improving and has had trouble in both his career races. With his improving pattern and a clean trip, he’ll be right there and tough to deal with giving the race favorite all he can handle.

THURSDAY, MARCH 22

SEVENTH RACE:

OBVIOUSLY (#6)

Invader from Ireland now calls the Mike Mitchell barn his home and we’ll opt to go with the new face in this spot for a stable that hits at a solid 32% first time out with trainer and also at a solid 32% returning off a 180+ layoff. Since his arrival, he has been working well and has won two from three career starts. Rafael Bejarano takes the call and this gelding will get the push from us in this spot.

FRIDAY, MARCH 16

FOURTH RACE:

CONSULADO (#7)

Was a solid second last time out behind Feb Biz who was perhaps KY Derby bound before he was sent to the sidelines. This Mike Puype trained gelding has already shown enough ability to be taken seriously in this spot as he continues to work well and will be cutting back in distance. He retains David Flores and looks every bit the part of a exotic single this afternoon.

SIXTH RACE:

CHIMI DEE (#8)

Was well supported in her debut run and validated that support with a solid second place effort. The three-year old daughter of Decarchy will improve with that race under her belt and has very little to beat here. Solid singleton in exotic play.

FOURTH RACE:

SATURDAY, MARCH 10

SIXTH RACE:

DON PERICO (#8)

Got a winning trip down the hillside course in his most recent and there is no reason to believe he can’t get the job done right back under Joel Rosario who once again rides. The Marty Jones trainee has got tactical speed and the son of In Excess can sit back in the second flight and wait if need be. He’ll be double tough to deal with here.

FOURTH RACE:

SUBPOENA THE DRESS (#1)

Makes her second start for the Mike Mitchell stable and will take a one level drop in class off a nice effort in her last. This six-year-old mare owns a nice four wins from 10 lifetime starts here at Santa Anita and will retain the services of Joel Rosario. With enough speed on paper, ‘Dress will get a nice stalking type trip and should have little trouble running down her rivals.

THIRD RACE:

BRITENESS (#1)

Just posted a powerful, visually impressive maiden win and this daughter of High Brite will get tested today as she faces winners for the first time. Earning a solid number, this Carla Gaines trainee has improving numbers and has since come back to post a nice a.m. spin over the course to indicate that all remains well with her. Encouraged to see Joel Rosario return to ride, we look for another top effort from her.

FIFTH RACE:

CAPITAL ACCOUNT (#2)

Will be in search of his fourth career win from six lifetime starts. His last win, over this course, was a visually impressive victory and he won with plenty left in the tank under Martin Garcia who will ride back for Bob Baffert. Baffert is on a roll here too, hitting at a solid 30% win rate and this five-year-old son of Closing Argument will take some beating.

SATURDAY, MARCH 3

FIRST RACE:

PACIFIC AVENUE (#1)

Returns to the races today off a vacation since last February and we know this guy runs well fresh as evident by his debut win at Hollywood Park back in 2010. The five year-old gelding from the Bruce Headley stable has been working quite well for his return and jock Joe Talamo returning to ride is a plus.

FRIDAY, MARCH 2

SEVENTH RACE:

PATHFORK (#6)

Looked to need his last race and should go much better this time around with a race under his belt. Joel Rosario returns to ride and without the presence of Mr. Commons in here figures to move forward as this four-year-old colt continues to improve. We are encouraged to see three moves in the a.m. since his last with one being solid, snappy type move. The barn of John Sadler had a nice day on Thursday, with two wins and we’ll use this son of Distorted Humor as a win and place wager as well as an exotic key horse.

THURSDAY, MARCH 1

THIRD RACE:

SARASOTA SUNSHINE (#4)

Is long overdue for her stateside win. Having been well regarded since she arrived here back on February 18, 2011, this six-year-old mare has never run a dull one but has burned lots of cash along the way. For today’s effort, we are encouraged to see the dip in class to a career low and the removal of the blinkers while retaining the services of Joel Rosario. It would seem it’s now or never for this Mike Mitchell trainee.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 26

SIXTH RACE:

BYRAMA (#5)

Makes her third stateside start this afternoon for Simon Callaghan and by the looks of things on paper this is the best shot this filly has had so far to break through. While cutting back in distance, and having improving numbers, the daughter of Byron (Green Desert) will have Rafael Bejarano returning to ride and she has had two maintenance drills since her last to keep her on edge. Look for her to be along in time for the win. She’s a win and place candidate as well as an exotic key horse.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25

NINTH RACE:

FRENEMY (#6)

Makes his fifth career start today and drops to a level he should be very tough to deal with. Nicely bred, he has always been well regarded and while the drop in class makes you believe he has some issues, he should still be able to handle the likes of these as he’ll return to sprinting and the dirt surface for trainer Bob Baffert who manages to keep Bejarano around to ride. Two useful drills since his last he looks like a short price winner to close out the Saturday card. Win wager only and a key in the exotics is the way to go here.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24

SEVENTH RACE:

EARNEDNEVERGIVEN (#3)

Hasn’t raced this cheaply in quite sometime but judging by this geldings current form perhaps it’s time he take a class dip. At the ripe old age of eight, this Robertino Diodoro trainee no doubt has lost a step or two but he has competed against some pretty salty types so we aren’t ready to throw in the towel on him just yet. Today he’s in with statebreds, owns a solid lifetime record here at Santa Anita and will get the hot riding bugboy with five pounds off. His recent a.m. drills indicate he’s still got some life left in him. There is also some value at 4/1 on the morning line.

SEVENTH RACE:

MATTO MONDO (#8)

Exit’s a $40k claimer in which the eight-year-old gelding was claimed by Steve Asmussen. Brought back up a level in class, the son of Sir Cat (Storm Cat) will now find Corey Nakatani on board and this gelding is razor sharp at the moment having won two straight and there is no reason to believe he can’t win another. With four wins from seven starts over the Santa Anita sod, this gelding loves to win races as evident by his 10 wins from 24 lifetime starts. Looks like a solid play here and good key horse in the exotics.

NINTH RACE:

GOOD MOJO (#4)

Has been given some time off to freshen up and mature and the three-year-old colt has been working well for his return while taking a healthy drop in class for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. The eager, hot riding bug boy Eswan Flores takes the call and while stopping short of say he’s a single on pick six tickets, he is definitely a win and place horse and exotic key vs. the likes of these. Look for him to come out running in his return race.

EIGHTH RACE:

PLATINUM MINE (#8)

Broke her maiden when last seen over this course and did so in impressive fashion for her current connections. While her recent pair have been just “okay”, she will get a 5-lb break in the weights today, continues to work well in the a.m. and should bounce back with a sharp try over a course this mare is proven over. We’ll bet her to win and also key her in the exotics this afternoon.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18

NINTH RASCE:

WINSOME CHARM (#7)

Is stretching back to two turns and this gutty seven-year-old gelding does have pace to run at, setting up his late kick under Joel Rosario. This is far from an easy spot for this guy, but we’ll give him the push to end his drought and that of the barn that is saddling him. Perhaps that will help his price a bit come post time.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17

FIRST RACE:

TUMMEL (#6)

Makes his seventh trip to the post today and will finally get to stretch his legs around two-turns which we strongly believe will move this three-year-old colt into the winners circle for his maiden diploma. Congrats Ski, runner-up in his last race has since come back to win and two races back he finished fifth to Out of Bounds and that effort was certainly no disgrace. Solid work since his last, he’ll be a play for us in the opener.

SIXTH RACE:

CALLED TO SERVE (#4)

Is one of three horses that will making their first start over the lawn this afternoon and one is a first-time starter. This three-year-old colt by Afleet Alex may not have appreciated the wet/fast surface he ran over last time so we’ll toss out that effort. His debut try however when third to Fed Biz and Zack n’Mat is a different scenario by far. Sent postward at 37/1, he outran his odds in a big way to two very promising colts and then was bet down in his next start to go off a 3/1. Drawing a line through that effort due to the track condition, he appears today going 1 1/8 miles on the lawn and will have the patient handling of Mike Smith getting the leg up. With route breeding and turf breeding in his blood, he figures to get the trip for his new connections and figures to be very tough to deal with here.

SECOND RACE:

PRINCESS ARABELLA (#3)

Talk about well meant first time starters! Trainer Bob Baffert unveiled yet another monster in his barn with this three-year-old filly by Any Given Saturday when she won at first asking at even-money. Walking out of the gate, she made a visually impressive move that left her galloping out well in front of the field and she looked like a filly with a very promising future. Connections must think so. They had the fortitude to nominate her to the Triple Crown races. Short price upcoming and she faces a promising field here but we like what she showed in her debut run and Martin Garcia takes the call back.

SECOND RACE:

LAST STING (#2)

Turned in a nice runner-up effort last time when going a flat mile and will have added real estate in which to work with this afternoon as trainer John Sadler will stretch out this five-year-old mare an extra 1/8th of a mile. Joel Rosario remains on board and she has had three a.m. moves since to indicate all remains well with her. On paper, there is enough speed to set up her late kick and she should have plenty to run at late. Look for her to be along in time.

THIRD RACE:

DYLAN DONNELLY (#2)

Showed vast improvement last time and seems to be on the upswing for the Mike Mitchell stable. With improving numbers and Martin Garcia sticking aboard this three-year-old gelding, the time is now as this son of Tribal Rule will be let loose over the turf course and with his pedigree, should love the switch. With a hint of speed shown in his last, and the rails being up at 30 feet, look for him to be hard to collar.

BELLA SWAN (#6)

Is coming off the $32k claim for Mike Mitchell last out and this five-year-old mares new connections bump her up a level in class. She’ll stretch out over a course that will have the rails up 30-feet and being the controlling pace should be able to wire her rivals under Joe Talamo. FIRST RACE:

FORDHAM ROAD (#4)

Was an unlucky loser last time while coming up a head short under Mike Smith. Switching to Victor Espinoza this afternoon, we look for the son of Giant’s Causeway to continue his improving pattern and simply be too much for his rivals to be able to handle here. Improving numbers, a sharp Hollywood Park move in 1:00 2/5 on January 26th make him the play to kick off Super Bowl Sunday.

THIRD RACE:

MR. COMMONS (#8)

Looked scary good in his last start over this course winning the Grade II Sir Beaufort and judging off that last win looks to be really coming around now for his connections. Hard to see him losing here if he repeats his last, a explosive move between horses that saw him drawing away for a facile win. Mike smith back on board.

SEVENTH RACE:

LOFTY AMBITION (#10)

Has shown a fondness for this down-hill-layout and will switch back to Rafael Bejarano as this 4-year-old daughter of Sky Mesa (Pulpit) debuts for the Marty Jones stable. In her most recent try, she was an okay 4th, in which the runner up, Miss Radiance has since come back to win in her next start. The recent drill over at Hollywood Park on Jan. 26 in 1:00 4/5 indicates all is well with this filly and we’ll give her the push in this spot. The 9/2 morning line price is very attractive and offers some value in a wide open race.

THIRD RACE:

INDECISE (#6)

Is improving with each and every start for the Richard Mandella stable. The three-year-old filly by Pleasant Tap (Pleasant Colony) ran a bang up second behind Indigo River last time, her first time out vs. winners. Her previous effort was a visually impressive maiden win, defeating Bluegrass Story who came back to win in her next start. In her debut run she faced Charm the Maker while a sharp third. Stretching out to a flat mile today, she’ll remain on the lawn and also retains Joe Talamo. While breaking from the outside is of some concern, she has shown enough tactical speed to get good position early on and should the pace come up slow, she could be sent to the lead. With the rails being up 24 feet that wouldn’t be a bad thing.

EIGHTH RACE:

UNZIP ME (#6)

Disappointed just a bit in her most recent start here and was entered to go in Saturday’s $100,000 Valentine Dancer but her connections opted to go in this spot today. She adores this course, having won six races from 10 lifetime starts and once again Rafael Bejarano will take a seat aboard this six-year-old homebred mare by City Zip. She’s had two works since her third place finish and we look for her to make amends this afternoon.

LEGAL SEPARATION (#1)

May be a hint of a price in this spot come post time and we’ll opt for this five-year-old gelded son of Jackpot (Seeking the Gold). With improving numbers and drawing the fence on the stretch-out, Victor Espinoza will string along for trainer Ed Moger. Like many in here, he’s proven over the course and his last try points him out as a major player this afternoon.

FOURTH RACE:

NIHILIST (#6)

Returns this afternoon for team Sadler and boasts a strong work tab as Joel Rosario takes the call back. Well meant when last seen at the beach on Sept. 3 of last year, the three-year-old daughter of Latent Heat (Maria’s Mon) was a sharp second to Customer Base who then comes right back to score again vs. winners. With plenty of time to mature, and benefiting from her debut effort, this filly is spotted well to earn her maiden diploma second time out.

FIRST RACE:

MY TRICKSTER (#3)

Comes west off the claim for the Mike Mitchell stable and will get the services of Joel Rosario. This three-year-old filly by Master Command (A.P. Indy) will appreciate two-turning and we’ll look for more improvement this afternoon from her. She’s had plenty of a.m. activity since her arrival and we look for a sharp effort from her. Keep in mind too that Mitchell hits at a solid 37% with his first off the claim stock.

Joel Rosario fills in for the injured Garret Gomez and the daughter of Bluegrass Cat (Storm Cat) also cuts back in distance. She continues to train well and is well spotted to earn her maiden diploma.

FIRST RACE:

STORMIN PROUD PAPA (#7)

Showed vast improvement first time out for Mike Mitchell and figures to continue that improving pattern in start number two. We are encouraged to see the bump up in class which can be viewed as a sign of confidence by his connections and also the return of Joel Rosario riding. A wide trip did this gelding in last time and we’ll hope for better racing luck today.

Was no match for the winner last time but did look good running on for the place spot under Joe Talamo who returns to ride this afternoon. The four-year-old gelded son of Unbridled Native (Unbridled) lands a spot in which he should finally be able to earn his diploma for the Don Warren stable.

FIRST RACE:

SHEM (#1)

At least is trying something different today, which is more than you can say for most of these non-win types. Stretching out and switching to the dirt may be all this eight-year-old needs to get him back on track. Having won a career 10 races from 41 starts, he does show a fondness here at Santa Anita having won a race from four starts. The drop in class from $25k to $10k claiming figures to help and he’s been out over the track once since his most recent, a blue collar type drill. He may be a hint of a price and we’ll give him the push to start off the card and the new racing week.

ANNIE LOU (#7)

Didn’t get the best of trips last time and will switch barns via a trainer switch. Joel Rosario will get the leg up from new trainer Jack Carava and this five-year-old mare hasn’t missed a beat in her a.m. training. She’ll also stretch out an extra furlong this afternoon and we look for her to make her maiden breaking run in this spot.

SIXTH RACE:

MERLIN Z (#5)

Seems to be figuring out what this game is all about now and this Adam Kitchingham trained gelding is well spotted for his effort this afternoon as he gets reunited with Hector Berrios and the blinkers will be removed. As so often the case, this starter allowance race has come up a bit on the tough side, handicapping-wise, but we look for a solid effort from this son of Marino Marini.

SECOND RACE:

SUDDEN GHOST (#6)

Makes career star number four this afternoon and this filly is coming off her career best effort last time. Trainer Tim Yakteen gives Chantal Sutherland the leg up, who does return to ride and this daughter of Ghostzapper will appreciate the dip in class to the $30k maiden claiming ranks. If she repeats her last effort, she should be able to control the pace and earn her maiden diploma.

FOURTH RACE:

JUST METEOR (#11)

Takes the class plunge from the maiden special ranks to the maiden basement level and that spells trouble for his rivals here this afternoon. Drawn outside, he’ll be able to eye-ball his rivals throughout and the son of Forestry (Storm Cat) should be able to control the pace throughout under Quinonez for trainer Richard Mandella. Probably needing his last, he’ll be a much fitter animal now with his comeback race under his belt.

THIRD RACE:

JAREDELLA (#3)

Now four-year-old filly makes her return today to the races for trainer John Sadler and will get the services of Joel Rosario. Working forwardly for her return, the daughter of Tapit (Pulpit) is gifted with early speed and has already shown a tad of talent since her vacation. We look for her to be allowed to roll out of the gate in what should be a wire-to-wire maiden win for a barn that hits at a solid 19% with returning runners.

FIRST RACE:

KIDS TABLE (#6)

Drawn nicely outside with tactical speed, the John Sadler trainee should break through here with career win number two. This four-year-old filly has already shown enough ability and will have Joel Rosario sticking with her. She’s one for one over this course and that was her eye catching maiden win back during the fall meeting here. She’s the horse to beat here.

SECOND RACE:

LETSGETITRIGHT (#10)

The rails are still up over the turf course (15 feet) and that means that speed will be favoring the lawn. Being stuck out in post 10 is a drawback but there are several positives here that outweigh the draw. One of course is the barn switch. Nothing wrong with Ellen Jackson up north but Mitchell has white hot numbers with his firsters at 34%. Secondly we’ll be getting Joel Rosario to ride and lastly the five-year-old veteran gelding has speed and should he be sent, he’ll be tough to collar over the speed favoring turf course. 3/1 morning line price is a fair number and it appears this gelding is live in his return to Santa Anita.

FOURTH RACE:

SECRET COVE (#2)

Has now won three straight and this four-year-old filly has never been any better than she is right now. Peter Miller will give a leg up to Corey Nakatani this afternoon who will replace Garret Gomez who opts to stick with So Belle. The daughter of Tribal Rule is sharp, has improving numbers and just posted a solid drill of 1:13 4/5 on Dec. 27th at Hollywood Park to indicate she maintains her form. We opt to stick with her and give her the push back as she goes in quest of her fourth win in a row.

THIRD RACE:

FORDHAM ROAD (#7)

From the John Shirreffs stable is making his third career start today and is a horse we have been following. We liked him last time when sent long, until we saw him in the paddock in which he was washy and simply looked out of sorts. Dispatched at 5/1, he just lacked any run and we are simply going to draw a line through his last and give him another chance to break through the maiden ranks. One positive from his last, however, was that his number earned greatly improved and we’ll look for continued improvement this afternoon. He cuts back in distance today, has shown a renewed interest in the a.m. and will retain Mike Smith. Lots in his favor.

FIFTH RACE:

SIZZLING GOLD (#3)

Will travel south off the claim by trainer Vann Belvoir and this five-year-old mare will take on a step higher at Santa Anita. The daughter of Formal Gold is very competitive, having one six from 19 lifetime starts and this is something we like to see, a competitive racehorse. Making her debut here at Santa Anita, there is no reason to think she won’t take to the surface and Joel Rosario will get the leg up. We are encouraged to see the sharp drill in :46 3/5 over this course since the claim and it appears all systems are go for a big run from this mare.

SECOND RACE:

D’WILDBUNCH (#10)

Looks like today or never for this three-year-old gelded son of D’wildcat. Trained by Kristin Mullhall, the only dull effort turned in by this gelding was his debut run at Del Mar. Since then, he has failed to run a dull one and Victor Espinoza returns to ride with two works since last being seen across town at Hollywood Park. Numbers-wise he’s a fit and the race looks to set up well for him. 7/2 on the morning line seems to be a fair number for him.

SECOND RACE:

CROSSING THE LINE (#7)

The big question is has this nine-year-old gelding developed a non-win habit? Once game on winning, the son of Cape Cross (Green Dancer) has now turned in five game efforts in a row without a win. This leads to the question has father time caught up with him? Perhaps. But we are willing to give him one additional shot here before we throw in the towel as he stretches out to a flat mile and Joel Rosario will return to ride. The bump up in class can be viewed as a sign of confidence by his connections and the recent blow out drill in 1:13 4/5 at Hollywood Park confirms that.

FRIDAY, DEC. 30

FIRST RACE:

YA WANNA HUG (#3)

Will return to the dirt today for trainer Richard Mandella and the two-year-old filly is also dropping into a maiden claimer for the first time and when Mandella makes this move he hits at a solid 31%. The daughter of Bertrando just blew out over the course in a nice :34 4/5 on Dec. 26 and Mandella also will give the bug boy Flores a leg up and that means getting 5lbs off. She’ll remain with state-breds and appears to be too much for her rivals in this spot.

THURSDAY, DEC. 29

FIFTH RACE:

PALIO PRINCE (#8)

Much to like about this three-year-old gelding this afternoon. While stopping short of suggesting he’s an exotic single, he does fit well here and has many positives going for him. First, he likes this course. He’s one for one over it and that win did come with Chantel in the irons. Secondly, his last was a sharp, better-than-looked effort with the winner, Luckarack, coming back to run a sharp 4th at 40/1 in Monday’s Malibu Stakes. The son of Roman Ruler continues to work well in the mornings and will give a good account of himself coming down-the-hill this afternoon.

MONDAY, DEC. 26

FIFTH RACE:

FIARANO (#6)

Has yet to run a dull one in a pair of career outings and most likely needed his last when chasing home Genius. In his previous start, his debut, he was a closing third to MacLean’s Music and this promising son of Forestry (Storm Cat) figures to be plenty fit now to strut his best stuff under David Flores who will get a leg up from trainer Mike Puype. Two solid drills since last raced should have him set for his best stuff this afternoon.

SIXTH RACE:

DOT’S MARK (#6)

Is coming up to her maiden win this afternoon after an impressive runner-up try last out over this course. The Gary Mandella trainee you could say has been slow developing as this will be her seventh attempt in the maiden ranks. However she did show enough improvement in her last to indicate she’s coming to hand and we are encouraged to see Joe Talamo take the call back. She’ll also be trying the turf again for the second time in her career and she she does have the breeding to win over the surface. She’ll get the push here.

FIFTH RACE:

DRESS CODE (#6)

Just controlled the pace vs. a similar group in his last and trainer Vann Belvoir has the five-year-old gelded son of Doneralie Court in sharp form since he was claimed two back for a tag of $10k. Today, he returns at the same level and seems to have found a home on the lawn. We are encouraged to see Victor Espinoza return to ride back and the recent drill in :58 4/5 on Dec. 8 here at Hollywood Park indicates all is still well with him. While he’s sharp, we’ll use him right back.

FIFTH RACE:

SPIRIT RULES (#12)

Biggest obstacle here is the post. Or is it? The two-year-old gelded son of Tribal Rule (Storm Cat) came running late to just miss after being well supported in his debut. Joe Talamo returns to ride the Paul Aguirre trained gelding and Talamo will simply need to break and get himself a clear path to run which should be accomplished from the outside post. It’s also noteworthy that he did encounter some trouble at the break to lose position and we are also encouraged by Exotic Slew (3rd) coming back to win his next start. Continued work pattern in the a.m. gives him the edge in this maiden special weight.

FOURTH RACE:

LIBERAL ARTS (#5)

Coming off a solid win at the $16k level, this three-year-old gelded son of Tribal Rule now finds himself double dipping into the $10k level. This guy obviously has his share of problems, but it’s not surprising to see trainer Doug O’Neill making this move trying to win a trainer title and also trying to help Joel Rosario win the jocks title as well. ‘Arts is sharp right now and there is nothing wrong with cashing another check and the connections getting out at the end of the meeting. He figures to get a similar trip like last time with the results being the same.

FOURTH RACE:

THE DIRECTOR (#1)

Now resides in the Bob Baffert stable off a private transaction and this four-year-old colt returns today at the basement level for his new connections. Last seen over this course under Chantel Sutherland, Martin Garcia takes the call in what looks to be the money run for this son of Mr. Greeley. He has enough speed to be able to flee the rail and get good position early, and we look for him to be pretty much in control of things throughout at a short price. A straight win wager and exotic single looks like a good way to go with him.

INDIAN FIREWATER (#3)

Colt is by far in the sharpest form of all his rivals this afternoon. While a solid second in his most recent, the Bob Baffert trained colt was headed right at the line while forcing the issue every step of the way from the inside post last time. The son of Indian Charlie has been given some time off by Baffert, has been working well for his return and will have Martin Garcia taking the call. He looks like the right way to go here and is a sharp single in exotic plays.

THIRD RACE:

MY BRITE CAROLINE (#8)

In this non-winners of two affair just how good does this filly have to be? No world beater to be sure. We like the fact that she’s just coming off her maiden win and the fact the runner-up has since come back to break her maiden is a positive for this daughter of High Brite. She continues to drill okay in the a.m. and the switch to Martin Garcia can be viewed as a positive move by trainer Ed Moger. The 6/1 morning line price is a very betable number for us and we’ll take a stab this filly can win right back.

SIXTH RACE:

CIRCLE THE MOON (#7)

Has shown enough ability to rate the push here. Stretching out to two turns and remaining on the lawn, we are encouraged to see Joe Talamo getting a leg up from trainer Bruce Headley as the cagey veteran trainer seems to have found a good spot for this three-year-old homebred son of Cyclotron (Grand Slam) to earn career win number two. While the outside box is of some concern, we look for ‘Moon to be on or near the pace and with a typical heady ride from Talamo, he’ll save enough ground and it won’t matter.

The three-year-old filly is dropping in class to the maiden basement level, switches to Joe Talamo and it is noteworthy to point out she’s racing over the surface she turned in the best race of her career. The Mike Puype trainee has much in her favor here.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1

FIRST RACE:

MY T QUICK (#3)

Turned in a sharp effort when last seen, a sharp runner-up try at Santa Anita. The five-year-old Old Topper gelding continues to work well and will be switching to Joe Talamo for trainer Brian Koriner. ‘Quick should get a good trip, sitting off the leaders and his late run should be very effective in this spot.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 27

FOURTH RACE:

JUDGE JOAN (#2)

Was recently claimed out of a $10k race and returns up a level for her new connections. This four-year-old filly likes it here, having won two from four lifetime starts and exit’s a race in which is much better than looked. She’s come back with three drills since for her new connections and trainer Ronald Ellis will give a leg up to Victor Espinoza. She gets the push from us in this spot.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26

SECOND RACE:

FORDHAM ROAD (#4)

Was very well meant in his debut when hammered down to the 8/5 favorite and when you consider him being from the John Shirreffs stable, there is something to be said about his intentions that afternoon. In typical Shirreffs fashion, he appeared to need the race and checked in an okay sixth, beating two rivals after a slow start. Today, he returns off a blue collar work tab and will have jockey Mike Smith taking the call. We like the son of Giant’s Causeway chances here and look for him to run to his expectations today. He benefits greatly now with a race under his belt and the 4/1 morning price is a very betable number for us without anything really standing out to us.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 25

TENTH RACE:

FEISTY FRIEND (#1)

May offer some value here. First off, moving inside from the outside, this three-year-old Friends Lake filly was well bet in her debut and didn’t disappoint. With a solid third place effort, she showed good speed and battled gamely to the end. While being caught 5-wide it wasn’t a bad debut and with an alert break today and a race under her belt she could find herself alone on the lead and take ‘em all the way. This race is filled with several that appear to be career maidens.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24

SIXTH RACE:

GO TO THE PULPIT (#4)

Is making his third career start today and figures to be able to break though from the maiden ranks for the Mike Puype stable. With improving numbers and the switch to Garret Gomez, this Lucky Pulpit (Pulpit) gelding exit’s a race last time in which both the winner and runner-up came back to win their next start. He continue to works well in the a.m. and will be a short price to graduate this afternoon.

NINTH RACE:

ELLO GUV (#3)

Is on the improve now and this Craig Lewis trainee may have finally found a field he can handle. We did like him quite a bit last time and while he didn’t disappoint, his third place finish as the pick didn’t sit well with the chalk players. With steadily improving numbers and Martin Pedroza riding back, we look for a winning effort in this relatively easy maiden claiming event to close out the Sunday card.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19

SECOND RACE:

AFLEET DEAL (#4)

Will be making his second start for the cagey connections of Bobby Wayne Grayson and will switch to the veteran rider Antonio Castanon for this effort. Since being claimed back on August 21 at Del Mar, this five-year-old gelding was hiked up in class to the optional claiming price of $40k and failed to fire at Fairplex Park. Interesting he did add front wraps that day but we are encouraged by the fact that while he is lowered back in class, he remains one notch above his claimed price. Also, he boasts an impressive lifetime mark here at Hollywood Park with three wins, two runner-up tries and a third place run from eight lifetime starts. While continuing to work okay in the mornings, he’ll get the push from us in this spot.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18

SIXTH RACE:

SIEMPRE ESPERANZA (#7)

Paul Aguirre trainee tumbles another two levels in class for this and will retain Alonso Quinonez to ride. The three-year-old filly by Forest Grove is a nice fit at this level and the runner-up in her most recent start, Hot Ticket, has since come back to win. We look for vast improvement from this filly this afternoon.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17

EIGHTH RACE:

CANDY SWEETHEART (#7)

Made his debut at Del Mar and was well supported at the windows. The result was a solid second vs. a solid field for trainer John Sadler. In his next start, he encountered some trouble over this course vs. a solid field of sprinters, including Fast Bullet who came back vs. winners and scored in solid fashion. While it may be easy to give up on this son of Candy Ride, we like the fact he’s stretching out and continues to work well in the a.m. so we’ll be giving him another chance to make amends in his third career start under Alonso Quinonez. He should also be a fair number on the tote board.

THIRD RACE:

SEA RASCAL (#2)

Looked good winning his last and this Jerry Hollendorfer trainee will be ridden back by Rafael Bejarano. The gelded son of Salt Lake owns an impressive record over this course and figures to be tough right back even with the bump up a level in class, which shouldn’t pose too much of a problem anyways.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12

FIRST RACE:

OHHHH A WISE GUY

Cuts back in distance and does possess enough speed to clear these and be very difficult to collar. Needing to be ridden aggressively out of the gate, the Swiss Yodeler filly will benefit from a switch to Victor Espinoza and of course the drop in class to the maiden $20k basement helps the cause. The three-year-old Robert Troeger filly looks like a good way to kick off the Saturday card.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11

SECOND RACE:

ZENIDEKKA (#1)

Tossed in a stinker across town at Santa Anita but the key here is that the three-year-old filly returns to the surface she loves. Both her career wins have come here and despite drawing the fence going 7/8ths she figures to get the stalking trip that she’ll need to be effective under David Flores for trainer Neil Drysdale. Coming off a dull but albeit troubled journey, we give the push here to the daughter of Benchmark.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10

SECOND RACE:

DOMONATION (#8)

Been popular at the claim box but what we like about this four-year-old gelding the most is the fact that he was re-claimed by trainer John Sadler and his solid career mark here at Hollywood Park. It seems that Sadler realizes he has some unfinished business with this son of Maria’s Mon as he lowers him to the $25k level first start off the claim. Drawn nicely outside with Joel Rosario up, we look for him to end his drought with a winning effort this afternoon.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6

SECOND RACE:

BONITA STAR (#5)

Is in her best form since arriving in the U.S. and is coming off a sharp runner-up effort and her previous try was a sharp win vs. two levels higher than she faces today. There isn’t a finer claiming trainer on the grounds and it appears that trainer Mike Mitchell has her spotted to be tough right back. Since arriving here earlier in the year, this three-year-old filly was highly regarded and did compete in some graded races before she was lowered to a more realistic level. Since she has found her niche, look for her to be competitive at or around this level and offer a big effort this afternoon.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5

SECOND RACE:

SO TOUGH (#7)

Was well supported at the windows in his debut race at Del Mar back on August 11 but just how many knew that this son of Old Topper would turn in a monster performance? After breaking awkwardly the gelding drew off for a visually impressive win and was claimed out of that race by John Sadler from Mike Mitchell who did a good job having him ready. Since that maiden win, Sadler has given him some time off and the gelding hasn’t missed a beat in the a.m. as he continues to work well. The outside post will help and we look for another sharp effort.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4

THIRD RACE:

INITIAL IMPRESSION (#8)

Trainer Mike Mitchell plays some poker here as the crafty trainer takes this five-year-old mare for $32k and runs her right back for $25k. Bringing her back at a mile over the turf, the daughter of Redattore turned in a sharp runner-up effort and has since come back to work over the Hollywood Park course in blue collar type fashion, 1:14 3/5. Has she blown a wheel since her last? We doubt it and with the solid 36% working for us first off the claim for Mitchell make a strong play in the exotics.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3

SIXTH RACE:

ZIPPIN E (#6)

Cuts back in distance this afternoon off a dull effort two turning last time. Allowed to open up and establish a clear lead vs. a notch higher in class, the Jack Carava trained filly offered little when challenged for the lead. Today, she is back where she fits and we are encouraged to see Joe Talamo riding back. Third start for new connections, she figures to make amends for two sub-par efforts in her recent pair and bounce back with a solid effort.

SECOND RACE:

DANCE WITH GABLE (#1)

Was scratched from Saturdays California Cup card, the Cal Cup Sprint to go in this much easier spot. Coming off a visually impressive win on September 17th at Fairplex Park, the seven year-old gelding is spotted for the action under Martin Pedroza who returns to ride the Michael Pender trainee. He likes to win races, with a 15 from 37 career win mark and figures to win his third straight race.

FOURTH RACE:

STONEY FLEECE (#6)

Has won three races from four career starts and this John Sadler trained colt is on the improve. His last was by far his career best and today will switch to the dirt, a surface he continues to work well over. With improving numbers and Victor Espinoza showing up to ride, this son of Decarchy is spotted for the action and figures to get the job done in the Bob Benoit California Cup Juvenile.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28

FIRST RACE:

BASMATI (#4)

While still in the maiden ranks, this two-year-old colt by Borrego (El Prado) is the lone entrant with route experience under his belt. He also is exiting two straight Grade I efforts while knocking heads with some salty types. Today, he returns to the maiden ranks and we are encouraged to see Garret Gomez return to ride the Doug O’Neill trainee. With a snappy drill over the course on October 21 in 1:13 2/5 we look for him to earn his maiden diploma to kick off the Friday action.

FIRST RACE:

ELUSIVE SCHEMES (#3)

Is coming off a visually impressive win and goes for new connections off the claim. Claimed out of his last race, this six-year-old gelding will go today for the Vann Belvoir stable as he gets bumped up a notch in class. He earned a good number in that recent win over this course on October 6 and retains the services of Rafael Bejarano and continues to work well. He looks like a good way to kick off the Thursday card.

NINTH RACE:

ALMOST A LADY (#7)

Has been working well enough for the John Sadler stable and Joel Rosario will scale this first time starter with a series of nice drills under her belt. Debuting in a relatively easy spot, this filly is bred to win early and we like her chances in this state-bred maiden affair. In our book she’s a solid wager and we also will go as far as giving her the push as an exotic key and Pick 6 singleton.

SECOND RACE:

FARLEY STAR (#5)

Has been freshened since Del Mar by trainer Mike Mitchell and will be ridden back by Joel Rosario this afternoon. This seven-year-old veteran mare likes it here at Santa Anita and is much better spotted for her top effort this afternoon than she was when last seen at the beach. It’s noteworthy to point out the third place finisher in her last has since come back to win and she continues to work well in the a.m. Tab for a big effort.

EIGHTH RACE:

D’WILDBUNCH (#7)

Has improving numbers and trainer Kristin Mulhall has this two-year-old gelding sitting on a big try this afternoon. After being wide throughout in his last, this son of D’wildcat (Forest Wildcat) came running and only fell a half-length short under Victor Espinoza who returns to ride this afternoon. With an added half-furlong to work with, look for this gelding in the winners circle in this spot.

EIGHTH RACE:

SONG BY WEST (#10)

Check the dictionary for the definition of “pace play” and you’ll see this fillies name beside it. In her debut over this course on October 2, she carved out fractions of :21 2/5 and :44 2/5 before packing it in vs. maiden special weights. Today, she is lowered to the basement level, retains Brice Blanc and will have an outside box in which to work with for trainer Sean McCarthy who hits at a respectable 22% with his stock making career start number two. Look for a much improved, wire-to-wire effort vs. this softer group.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16

SIXTH RACE:

HANDSOME MIKE (#3)

Has been freshened since his last effort at Del Mar and we were impressed by this colts try in his debut effort. The Melody Conlon trainee had a rough trip in a better-than-looked effort while encountering traffic trouble late behind the talented Drill. The son of Scat Daddy will try the down-the-hill turf course and is bred to handle the trip and he continues to work well in the morning. We give him the push in this spot and like seeing Mike Smith showing up to ride. Look for much improvement this afternoon.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15

SECOND RACE:

MISS AMBITION (#2)

We’ll give the push here to the Peter Miller trainee. Many of these gals are coming out of Fairplex Park races and since we covered the races at Fairplex we feel quite comfortable in doing so. Dropping in class, this daughter of Touch Gold has the ability to take some early heat and finish, something she displayed in her debut win at Hollywood Park and since Santa Anita had a speed bias on Thursday, it’s quite possible that the track will still be leaning that way come today. Switching to Martin Garcia helps her chances.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14

FIRST RACE:

LIAISON (#6)

When this Bob Baffert trainee was last seen at Del Mar he was dispatched at 9/1 and certainly outran his odds in a troubled debut try. Under Rafael Bejarano, who returns to ride today, the three-year-old colt by Indian Charlie (In Excess) didn’t break all that alertly and then was pushed wide into the stretch. Still he finished nicely for the show dough and galloped out nicely past the wire. With a race under his belt and the outside post in which to stalk, he figures to improve on the stretch out second time out.

FIRST RACE:

SPIRIT SEEKER (#2)

Is coming off a visually impressive win up north and will ship south for the Jerry Hollendorfer stable for this race. Hollendorfer will employ Rafael Bejarano to ride and this once past classer was once seen in Grade II races around these parts. With those days long past this five-year-old mare, a repeat of her last and her recent form is still good enough to take down top honors at this level. She’s been freshened and continues to work well in the a.m.
